The Brad Gushue rink from St. John’s, which includes PEI natives Brett Gallant and Adam Casey, will be facing the Glenn Howard foursome from Ontario in this morning’s 10:30 Atlantic quarter-final round of the 24 team $45,000 Stu Sells Toronto Tankard, with the winner advancing to the semi-final round against an Ottawa team skipped by Bryan Cochrane, with Mathew Camm throwing 4th stones, at 2 pm. The final goes at 5 AT. Other quarter-finalists include Mike McEwen, and defending champ Jeff Stoughton, both from Winnipeg. Gushue is 4-1, his only loss coming to John Epping, who subsequently lost to Cochrane in the other quarter-final, which went last night.
Meanwhile, the only all-PEI team in the World Curling Tour event, skipped by Suzanne Birt, went 2-2 in the women’s round robin, tied with a number of other teams. Top shootout scores were used to determine who made it to the playoff round, and Team Birt came up a bit short. The team report that they were pleased with the event and plan to return next year.
The two Maritime teams in the $15,000 15 team women’s event have made it to the playoffs, with defending champion Mary Anne Arsenault of Halifax advancing to the 10:30 am Atlantic quarter-finals, against Lisa Farnell of Ont. The winner will face another Halifax team, skipped by Heather Smith-Dacey, in the semi-finals at 2 pm. The final is at 5.
