Winnipeg’s Kyle Doering rink, which includes PEI’s Chris Gallant at second, edged another Winnipeg team, skipped by Cole Peters. by a 6-5 score in an extra end this afternoon to win the men’s section of the 2013 Sun Life Financial Junior Challenge Curling Bonspiel at the Brandon Curling Club. Gallant described the game and win as “a nail biter, but we pulled it off by a couple inches in the extra”. Team Doering beat the Tyler Grumpelt team from Brandon 7-2 in the semi-final round. Gallant is currently attending university in Winnipeg.
Cory Christenson from Duluth Minnesota beat the Shannon Birchard team from Winnipeg 6-2 to take the women’s final. Teams from Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Wisconsin, and Minnesota took part in the event.
