New Brunswick’s Comeau and Nova Scotia’s Weagle rinks win Silver Fox Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel

The 7th annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside. The Graham Weagle team from the Chester Nova Scotia Curling Club doubled the Matthew MacLean rink from the Cornwall Curling Club 8-4 to win the junior men’s division, while the Justine Comeau rink from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton New Brunswick defeated the Cornwall team skipped by Amanda MacLean (Matthew’s sister),, stealing two triples in the game, to win by a 9-3 score and capture the women’s event.

Other members of the Weagle team are Jeffery Meagher, Scott Weagle, Max Kessler, and coach Tracy Dobson, while Alan MacLean, Shawn Pitre, Noah O’Connor, and Glen MacLean round out the runner-up Matthew MacLean team.

Completing the Comeau rink are Emma LeBlanc, Brigitte Comeau, Keira McLaughlin, and coach Tim Comeau, while the Amanda MacLean rink includes Jane DiCarlo, Emily Gray, Aleya Quilty, and coach Lori Robinson.

Matthew MacLean was leading 4-1 after seven ends in the men’s final, but Weagle took a deuce in the eighth end, stole a triple in the ninth, and stole a deuce in 10 for the come-from-behind win. 24 teams from the three Maritime provinces took part in this year’s event.

In the Sunday morning semi-finals, defending PEI junior men’s champion Tyler Smith and his Montague Curling Club rink sustained their first loss in the event, 7-4 to the Weagle team, and did not advance to the finals, while the Matthew MacLean team.eliminated Summerside’s Alex MacFadyen rink by a 7-2 score. MacLean, Weagle and MacFadyen all finished round robin play on Saturday with 4-1 win-loss records.

In the junior women’s section, the defending event and PEI junior women’s champion Veronica Smith rink from Cornwall also had their first loss of the event in the semis. Their Cornwall clubmates, the Amanda MacLean foursome, were down two with hammer coming home, and tied the game with a deuce. They then stole the extra end for the win. In the other semi, Comeau beat Cornwall’s Rachel O’Connor foursome by an 8-5 score to advance to the final. MacLean and Comeau went 4-1 in the round robin, while O’Connor had a 3-2 record.

The winning Graham Weagle and Justine Comeau foursomes will each go home with $600, while the runner-up Matthew and Amanda MacLean rinks will receive $300 each. The remaining semi-finalists – Tyler Smith, Alex MacFadyen, Veronica Smith, and Rachel O’Connor, will pocket $125 per team.
