Defending women’s champ opens with win at provincial junior curling ch’ships (Journal)

Players pay tribute to late curler

SUMMERSIDE – The defending women’s champions are off to a winning start in this year’s Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

The Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club opened play with an 11-5 win over clubmate Emily Keen on Thursday night. Smith scored a total of five deuces, including three with the hammer.

A moment of silence was held for Kevin Gallant before the opening draw. Gallant, a former longtime member of the Matthew MacLean rink, was killed in a snowmobile accident on Wednesday.
