The defending champion Veronica Smith rink, and their Cornwall clubmates, the Amanda MacLean team, each had another decisive win this morning, to move to 4-0 and 3-0 win-loss records, respectively, in round robin women’s play at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Smith stole a triple and a deuce in ends six and seven to beat Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown team 9-1, while MacLean defeated Kaleign MacKay and her Crapaud/Silver Fox team 8-1, stealing a triple in the third end and singles in ends four and seven, with both games ending early.
On the triple-knockout men’s side, Kyle Holland and his Charlottetown rink came out winners in the low-scoring battle of unbeaten teams for the first qualifying spot in the four team Page championship round, beating Matthew MacLean and his Cornwall team by a 5-2 score. The game included 3 blank ends, and the teams were tied 2-2 after seven ends of play, when Holland, with Tony Nabuurs throwing fourth stones, picked up a deuce in eight, stole a single in nine to grab a 5-2 lead, and ran MacLean out of rocks in the final end.
In other men’s games, Justin Campbell won the “Battle of Summerside”, 5-2 over Alex MacFadyen, defending men’s champ Tyler Smith stole the last two ends in a 7-4 win over Western’s Leslie Noye. On the women’s side, Emily Keen picked a 6-2 over Cornwall clubmate Meghan Ching, to improve to 2-2. Ching is at 1-3.
Play continues at 6 pm.
