Showdown between unbeaten Smith, MacLean in Pepsi Jrs women’s div., Smith, MacLean to faceoff in men’s B qualifier, both at 9 am Sunday

It’ll be Smith vs MacLean in two big games Sunday morning at 9 am in the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht in Summerside.

In the women’s division, Amanda MacLean will face defending champion Veronica Smith in a showdown between the two unbeaten teams, who both curl out of the Cornwall Curling Club. In the men’s division, Matthew MacLean (Amanda’s brother) will face defending champion Tyler Smith (no relation to Veronica) to determine the “B” qualifer out of the triple knockout for the Page championship round A vs B game, which will be against Charlottetown’s Kyle Holland. MacLean is from Cornwall, while Smith is curling out of Montague this year.

Veronica Smith sits at 5-0, following a 7-4 Saturday evening win over Kaleigh MacKay, from the Crapaud and Silver Fox clubs, while Amanda MacLean is at 4-0, beating Jenny McLean and her host club rink 10-1, stealing a deuce and a triple in a game that was wrapped up in six ends. Emily Keen of Cornwall filled up the scoreboard with two five-enders in her 14-6 win over Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike in the other women’s match. Keen improved to 3-2, while Moerike, Kaleigh MacKay, and Meghan Ching are 1-3 in the round robin. Ching takes on MacKay, and McLean faces Moerike in the Saturday morning draw. The women’s round robin wraps up with the 2 pm Sunday draw, with Keen playing McLean, Moerike taking on MacKay, and Ching playing MacLean.

On the men’s side, Tyler Smith beat Summerside’s Justin Campbell 7-3 Saturday evening to advance to the B qualifier against Matthew MacLean. The other two games saw the elimination of Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe and Devin Schut from the triple knockou event, after suffering their third loss – 8-3 to Alex MacFadyen for DeWolfe, and 5-2 to Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The two men’s qualifiers for the Page C/D game will be decided with the 2 pm Sunday draw, with MacFadyen facing Campbell, both from the host club, in the D qualifier, and Noye taking on the loser of the 9 am B qualifer in the game to determine the C qualifier.

The men’s Page A/B and C/D games go Sunday evening, along with any women’s tiebreakers, if required. There is also a 9 am Monday draw reserved in the event a second tiebreaker round is needed. The men’s and women’s semi-finals go Monday at 2pm, with the finals at 7.

The winning men’s and women’s teams advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 18-26, 2014 in Liverpool NS.
