MacFadyen, Smith take last spots for Men’s Page round, Keen advances to women’s semi-final at Pepsi Juniors

The men’s Page finals at 7 this evening, and the 2 pm Monday women’s semi-finals are now set at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships being played at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside. The final two spots in the men’s Page round were determined this afternoon, with Alex MacFadyen beating Silver Fox clubmate Justin Campbell 12-4 to take the C qualifier. Campbell took singles in the first two ends, but MacFadyen fought back wth a deuce in the third, and then stole a total of seven points in the next four ends for a 9-2 lead. Campbell took two in eight, but MacFadyen scored a triple in the ninth to wrap up the game.

Defending champion Tyler Smith won the D qualifier when the Leslie Noye rink from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton was unable to get to the venue due to weather conditions and had to forfeit their game against the Montague foursome. The winner of tonight’s Page A vs B match between Kyle Holland of Charlottetown and Matthew MacLean of Cornwall will advance directly to Monday’s 7 pm final, with the loser taking on the winner of the Page C vs D, between MacFadyen and Smith, in the 2 pm Monday semi-final, and the winner of the semi advancing to the final.

Holland qualified out of the A section of the triple knockout round on Saturday morning, with a 5-2 win over MacLean. On Sunday morning, MacLean took the B qualifier, defeating defending champion Tyler Smith and his Montague rink by an 8-1 score, stealing singles in the first two ends, and deuces in ends three and four to lead 6-0. Smith got on the board with a single in five, but two MacLean more singles in six and seven brought the game to an early conclusion.

Meanwhile, Cornwall’s Emily Keen rink took third place in the round robin, and the final spot in the women’s championship round this afternoon, with a a 9-7 win over Jenny McLean of the host club. The other team that was in contention for the spot was the Kaleigh MacKay rink from Crapaud and the Silver Fox. They needed a win, plus a Keen loss to advance, but lost their game 6-4 to Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike team. The other game this afternoon, which didn’t affect the championship round, saw Cornwall’s Amanda MacLean, who secured second place this morning, beat clubmate Meghan Ching 10-4.

In this morning’s draw, the Veronica Smith rink from Cornwall got the opportunity to defend their Pepsi Juniors title, locking up first place and a bye to the 7 pm Monday final game, by being the only team to go through the round robin undefeated, after handing Cornwall’s MacLean team their first loss, by a 9-4 score, aided by a four point fifth end. As tiebreakers are not needed, the women will have the evening off, with MacLean taking on Keen in the semi-final Monday at 2 pm, and the winner facing defending champion Smith in the 7 pm final.

The final women’s round robin standings are as follows: Veronica Smith 6-0, Amanda MacLean 5-1, Emily Keen 4-2, Kaleigh MacKay and Lauren Moerike 2-4, and Jenny MacLean and Meghan Ching 1-5.

The men’s and women’s winners from Monday’s finals will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 18-26, 2014 in Liverpool NS.
