Play gets underway Friday morning at 8:30 at the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, hosted this year by the Cornwall Curling Club, who last hosted this event in 2005. The top age 60 and over winner and runner-up teams from the provincial Masters championships of the three Maritime Provinces are invited to compete in this annual championship, which rotates between the three provinces. All games are eight ends. New Brunswick, where many Masters curlers are volunteering at the World Women’s in Saint John, is only sending one team in both the men’s and the women’s events, so there is an additional host province team competing in each.

The 2013 event was held at the Capital Winter Club.in Fredericton, NB. The Women’s winner was the New Brunswick runner-up team from the host club, Isabel Yeamans, third Helen MacDonald, second Joan Whitehead and lead Toni O’Brien, who are back this year with their team intact.
The runner-up women’s team last year was from this year’s host club, and was skipped by Carol Sweetapple, with Danielle Girard at 3rd, second Carlene Peters and lead Bernie Field. Girard and Field are curling on PEI’s third women’s team at this year’s event, skipped by Myrna Sanderson. The PEI women’s contingent is led this year by current Masters champs, the Shirley Berry rink from the host club, and is rounded out by the Diane MacKay rink from Cornwall and the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Judy Burgess from Truro, and Louanne Labelle from the Dartmouth Curling Club are the Nova Scotia women’s entries.
The men’s winner last year was the New Brunswick runner-up rink, also from the host Capital Winter Club, skipped by Dave Sullivan, who is not back this year. Rod Aubé is skipping this year’s entry, also from the CWC. The 2013 PEI Masters champions, the Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside were last year’s men’s runners-up. Other members of the team were third Ted MacFadyen (substituting for Blair Jay), second Lou Nowlan, and lead Earle Proude. MacFadyen, this year’s PEI champ, is back with Nowlan and Proude, along with Alan Montgomery. MacFadyen also skipped this year’s PEI Senior Men’s championship team, backed up by Nowlan. PEI’s second team is also from the Silver Fox, and is skipped by John Holmes, while the Brian Ellis foursome from the Crapaud Community Curling Club are PEI’s third team. Nova Scotia is sending the Milt Larsen foursome from the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, and the Haylett Clarke team from the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow.
