Gushue scored a triple in the second and led 4-2 after five but Stoughton tied it up with a deuce in the sixth. Gushue blanked the seventh to retain the hammer coming home.

Stoughton was playing his third game of the day after defeating Calgary’s John Morris and Sweden’s Niklas Edin in the tiebreaker matches.

Team Gushue dropped their opening draw game to Team Stoughton Tuesday night but has now won four games in a row to reach the semifinals at 11 p.m. AT / 7 p.m. PT.

Gushue will face Toronto’s John Epping, who held off Switzerland’s Sven Michel 5-4.

Epping opened the game with a deuce and never relinquished the lead, as the two rinks exchanged singles through the second and third ends and again in the fourth and fifth ends. Epping added a steal of one in the sixth to pull ahead by three points. Michel scored one in the seventh and Epping gave up a steal of one in the final end to close the game.

The other men’s semifinal sees a matchup between Olympic champion Brad Jacobs from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen.

Jacobs earned a 5-4 win over Kevin Koe after the Calgary skip’s first stone in the eighth end slid through the house and Jacobs, with the hammer, capitalized to set up the winning deuce.

McEwen, wearing red playoff pants, cruised past Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock 9-3 in seven ends. The Winnipeg rink scored three in the second and added a steal of one in the fourth to pull away 4-1. Leading 6-3 with the hammer in the seventh, McEwen added another triple to ice the game.

The women’s semifinal games sees Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones face Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson in an Olympic gold medal game rematch while two-time defending Masters champion Rachel Homan of Ottawa meets Edmonton’s Val Sweeting in a Scotties final rematch.
