Smith and Mackay win 1st game of best of 3 Canada Games selection finals

Draw one is complete at Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in the Best of 3 selection finals for PEI’s men’s and women’s entries for the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George BC, with the Tyler Smith and Kaleigh Mackay teams picking up the wins.

Tyler Smith and his team of 3rd Brooks Roche, 2nd Dylan Lowery, and lead Ryan Lowery, with coach Kevin Smith, beat the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club 12-5 in the 1st men’s game. MacFadyen is unable to play due to illness, so third James Dalton moved up to skip for the weekend, with Alberton’s Leslie Noye sparing at third. Matthew MacDonald plays second, and Parker MacFadyen throws lead stone for the team, which is coached by David MacFadyen.  The teams traded deuces in the first two ends, but Smith, who skipped PEI’s 2011 Canada Games men’s entry, followed a triple in end 3 with a stolen deuce and two singles to lead 9-2 after 6 ends. The MacFadyen rink narrowed the gap with a deuce and a single, but a Smith triple in the 9th put the game out of reach.

The women’s opening game was won by the Crapaud rink of Kaleigh Mackay, Danielle Collings, Alyssa Wright, and Kaleigh Peters, with coach AJ Campbell, who beat the Lauren Moerike squad from Charlottetown 11-3. The Mackay team took singles  in the first three ends, with Moerike taking singles in the next two. Mackay responded with a deuce in end 6 to lead 5-2. Moerike took a single in seven, but Mackay picked up a big six points in the eighth end for the win. Other members of the Angela Hodgson-coached Moerike rink are 3rd Ashley Gallant, 2nd Annika Kelly, and lead Tati Kelly.

Draw two in the best of 3 goes at 3 pm. Draw three, if needed, goes at 1 pm Sunday.
