Different approach pays off for Team Birt, says third Shelly Bradley (Journal)

(by Jason Simmonds)

SUMMERSIDE – A different approach this season proved beneficial for the Suzanne Birt rink.

Shelly Bradley plays third stone for the Suzanne Birt rink.

The foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, consisting of third stone Shelly Bradley, second stone Michelle McQuaid, lead Susan McInnis and coach Peter Gallant, has won the right to represent P.E.I. at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championship in Moose Jaw, Sask., from Feb. 14 to 22.

“We changed the way we did a lot of things this year,” explained Bradley, who will be participating her 10th or 11th national Scotties. “We changed our practices; we practised with consequences; we had meaning with every rock we threw; we worked with a sports psychologist; we trained physically.

“We did a lot of things different this year than we did in the past. I’m not saying we didn’t train or practise with meaning in past years, but we just made a conscious choice that every time we threw a rock this year to make it count and mean something. . .

“It just made us focus on our routines, and be comfortable and trust what we’ve been doing all year long.”
