Adam Casey rink claims PEI Tankard B event final (Journal)

Win avenges loss to Newson in Tankard’s A final

ALBERTON — Adam Casey rebounded from his “A” final loss to Jamie Newson in the Curl P.E.I. Provincial Men’s Tankard to down Newson 9-8 in the “B” final Sunday afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Anson Carmody, left and Robbie Doherty, front end on the Adam Casey rink, get in line to watch as opposing skip, Jamie Newson calls for his sweepers during the teams’ B event final match-up at the Men’s Tankard curling championship in Alberton. Casey won the game. Both teams are still alive in the triple knock-out championship which will be decided Tuesday.

But it wasn’t pretty. Casey drew for two in the ninth to trail Newson 8-7 heading home. Then he spent most of the tenth guarding shot stone on the top of the eight-foot.

When Newson opened up the front of the house and moved the shot stone over a little, Casey opted to draw to the other side of the eight-foot with his final shot. His shot came to stop behind the T line and Newson opted to hit for the win, knowing at least a hit and roll-out would secure a tie.

But his release was a touch wide and the final stone didn’t curl. It nicked the Casey stone on its way out of the house, but left the opposing stone in the rings, thus allowing Casey a steal of two and the win.

“We always had one life left (but) I think we were pretty fortunate,” Casey said in reflecting on the outcome in the tenth. “Newson had played a good game up to that point and he really gift-wrapped that one for us, for sure.”
