(by Jason Simmonds)

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – The Suzanne Birt rink got back on the winning track on Sunday night.

Michelle McQuaid, second stone for the Suzanne Birt rink, releases a shot while third stone Shelly Bradley and lead Susan McInnis are ready to sweep. The action took place during last month’s provincial women’s curling championship at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

Birt, third stone Shelly Bradley, second stone Michelle McQuaid and lead Susan McInnis jumped out to an early lead and never trailed en route to a 7-5 win over Northern Ontario’s Tracy Horgan at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The team out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex improved to 2-1 (won-lost).

Birt counted deuces in the first and third ends with the hammer, and stole a single in the fourth end to go up 5-1. Horgan (1-2) closed to within 6-5 after eight ends, but Birt scored a single point in the ninth.

P.E.I. will face British Columbia’s Patti Knezevic (0-3) and Alberta’s Val Sweeting (3-0) on Monday.
