In the wake of the successful Ford World Men’s Championship in Halifax, another major curling event is headed to Nova Scotia.
The Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S.
The 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, the 54th renewal of the traditional two-man, two-woman national event, will be played Nov. 14-19, 2016, at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S., it was announced today by Curling Canada.
“We are excited to be given the opportunity to host this national curling event in Yarmouth,” said Rick Allwright, Host Committee Chair and President of the Yarmouth Curling Association. “Yarmouth is well known for hosting great events and the opportunity to host this event within our arena is going to be amazing. The curling association will utilize this event to build more interest in curling locally, develop our volunteers and add another great event to this area’s hosting resumé.”
It will be the first time Yarmouth has hosted a Curling Canada championship, and it will be the the third time the Canadian Mixed has been staged in Nova Scotia, both times at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax.
In 1977, Manitoba’s Hal Tanasichuk prevailed, while in 2002, hometown favourite Mark Dacey won his first of two Canadian Mixed championships.
Nova Scotia teams have captured seven Canadian Mixed titles — Dacey’s second victory was the most recent. Paul Flemming (1999 and 2003) and Steve Ogden (1995 and 1999) also are two-time champions, while Scott Saunders won in 1993.
The Canadian Mixed Championship began in Toronto in 1964 and has been won a leading 10 times by both Saskatchewan and Alberta. Saskatchewan pulled into a tie for the lead at the most recent Canadian Mixed, last November in North Bay, Ont., where Max Kirkpatrick’s team from Swift Current captured the gold medal. The Kirkpatrick team will represent Canada at the inaugural World Mixed Championship, Sept. 12-19 in Berne, Switzerland.
The 2016 Canadian Mixed Championship is scheduled for Nov. 15-21, 2015, at the Weston Club in Toronto.
