Position Profile

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Board of Governors to carry out all orders, resolutions and policies approved by the Board. The CEO will have responsibility and accountability for the leadership, strategic direction, and overall management of Curling Canada within an approved budget. The CEO will also be a key spokesperson for Curling Canada.

Curling Canada has a solid foundation and a supportive Board who recognize the importance of traditions as well as bringing innovation to the organization. You will engage with key stakeholders to effectively communicate the value and relevance of the Curling Canada brand, programs and championships. As the CEO you will develop a value proposition that attracts sponsors and partners to support the vision and long-term strategy of Curling Canada. You are ultimately in charge of growing the sport and shaping the future of curling in Canada.

You will inspire the team to support and add value to all members and partners to which we are accountable. You will also leverage your recognized status as a thought leader to continually advance our position and be a positive contributor to the future of curling both in Canada and globally.

You are comfortable operating in a not-for-profit organization where you are responsible for the future success of the business. You are a member of a senior management team and a top performer in your current role with a proven track record of leadership, developing/implementing a strategic plan, marketing, sales and client service. Accountability

The CEO will lead all aspects of Curling Canada with integrity and in accordance with the strategic plan, and Curling Canada policies.

Vision and Strategy

Sponsorship and Partnerships

  • Continue to expand and strengthen crucial partnerships. Develop and effectively implement a comprehensive strategy to maintain highly productive relationships with strategic partners.
  • Responsible for leading/guiding the sales efforts of the team (direct sales team or with a third party partner) in the acquisition, maintenance and retention of corporate partners and sponsors.Marketing, Communications and Public Relations
  • Lead overall marketing, promotion and PR strategy and activities for the Curling Canada brand and employ an effective strategy to monetize assets.
  • Strengthen relationship with national media partner (TSN).
  • Act as the key spokesperson for Curling Canada and become an extension of the brand. At ease with the media, a thought leader that displays passion and enthusiasm for the sport of curling and its potential.
  • Communicate the organizations vision, policies and the management plan effectively to all stakeholders including the Board, staff, and external key stakeholders including media, to ensure that mutual interests are served and objectives achieved.
  • Align communication across Curling Canada and Member Associations to ensure that messaging is consistent.

Relationship Management

  • Will seek input and perspective on key issues and projects and be an active listener who builds consensus and discovers common ground in resolving issues.
  • Ensure staff, volunteers and stakeholders are informed and up-to-date on important issues and developments with a high- touch, transparent, productive and collegial manner.
  • Work toward improving stakeholder engagement, provincially and nationally, by fostering strong and meaningful relationships that will advance the sport of curling in Canada.

Operations and Finance

  • Oversee company operations to insure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources.
  • Approve company operational procedures, policies, and standards.
  • Direct and coordinate business activities, costs, operations, and forecast data and review activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining established objectives.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of directly related senior management experience in the sport/business sector or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years sports marketing and sponsor relationship experience. Has gained an understanding of the way the sports industry operates today as well as in the rapidly changing new media world.
  • Has a true passion for sport and has knowledge of the national, provincial, and international sporting landscape.
  • Understanding of membership based organizations and high touch client service.
  • Exposure at Board level and understanding of governance issues. Has worked effectively with an engaged and diverse volunteer board of directors.
  • Has set the direction and vision of an organization.
  • Built, implemented and operationalized a strategic plan. Has put in place action steps supported by the tools and resources required to successfully execute the plan against business objectives.
  • An accomplished and respected hands-on leader with a track record of growth that has successfully transformed an organization and its culture by implementing structure and governance to achieve an efficient, effective and high performing organization.
  • Operates with fiscal responsibility demonstrating strong budgeting, business planning and resource management skills.
  • An innovative thinker and visionary with a demonstrated ability to engage and inspire others around the vision for the future while also staying focused on moving the agenda forward by leading and motivating others to achieve the goals of the strategic plan.

  • Proven experience with enduring partnerships in both the private and public sectors. Brings strong ties to Corporate Canada with an ability to leverage their connections and the connections of others to open doors and drive revenue and visibility.
  • An influencer skilled at building consensus, issue management and dispute resolution. Has a well- defined sense of diplomacy and understands the value of being a good listener. Engages people with a genuine point of view and is credible from start to finish.
  • Strong written and oral communications, public/media relations and events expertise. Brings a charismatic presence and is an adept public speaker who will enhance the image of the organization.
  • Has the courage, enthusiasm, and personal drive to both understand and successfully navigate a dynamic and regionally diverse environment enhancing relationships with all stakeholders.
