PEI Curling Ch’ships: entries due this month for Juniors, Masters, Scotties

The 2015-2016 Curl PEI provincial curling championship season is about to get underway here on PEI, and a number championships have December entry deadlines.

Mixed Doubles

Entries have already closed for the Mixed Doubles, with two teams, Kyle Holland and Sabrina Smith from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and Steven Thomson and Lyndsey Moore from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, entered. This event is scheduled for December 11-13 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with the winning duo advancing to the national Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, March 31-April 3, 2016 in Saskatoon Sask.

Pepsi Juniors

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers twenty years of age or under as of and including June 30 2015, take place at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, December 27-31 2015. Entry deadline is December 4th, and entry fee is $160 per four person team, plus $36 per player Curling Canada competitor fees (plus 3% surcharge if paying by credit card or PayPal). The winning teams advance to the 2016 Canadian Juniors, January 23-31, 2016 in Stratford, Ontario (Website).

Defending provincial champions are the Veronica Smith foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Tyler Smith team from the Montague Curling Rink. Tyler Smith is back looking to defend his title. Veronica has aged out of juniors, but the rest of her team, now skipped by Katie Fullerton, are entered.

Scotties (Women’s) and Future Scotties (Developmental)

The  Montague Curling Rink are the hosts for the 2016 PEI Scotties Provincial Women’s Curling Championship, and the Future Scotties developmental event for female curlers under age 21, who may one day compete in the Scotties. These events both take place January 16-19, 2016. Entry deadline for the Scotties is December 18, 2015, and entry fee is $180 per team, plus $36 per player Curling Canada  competitor’s card fee. Entry deadline for the Future Scotties is January 2, 2016, and entry fee is $80 per team.

Defending PEI Scotties champions are the Suzanne Birt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, who beat their clubmates the Kathy O’Rourke team in last year’s final at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. It was Birt’s 8th PEI women’s title. She is back, with a new team, this year. This year’s winning team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts. February 20-28, 2016 at Revolution Place, in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Masters

The 2015-2016 PEI Masters Curling Championships, with Men’s and Women’s divisions for curlers age 60 and over take place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club from January 22-26, 2016.
Entry deadline is December 18, 2015, and team entry fee is $180.

Winners and runners-up from the provincial championships will advance to the 2016 Maritime Masters Curling Championships to be held at Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club from March 11 to 13, 2016. The winning rinks, or the runners-up if they don’t choose to attend,  are also invited to participate in the 2016 Kings County Canadian Masters Championships, April 4-10 at the Glooscap Curling Club in Kentville NS and the Wolfville Curling Club.

Defending Island champions are the Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and the Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Charlottetown Curling Complex.
