(by Eric McCarthy)

ALBERTON – There was no shortage of drama at the P.E.I. provincial Pepsi junior curling championships on Sunday evening.

Matthew MacLean was forced to throw a light-weight takeout with his final rock in the 10th end against defending junior men’s champion Tyler Smith at the Western Community Curling Club.MacLean’s final rock hung out until the near hog line when it caught the curl, and finished with a hit-and-stick for the 7-6 win.

MacLean, who started the day with a 6-3 win over Alex MacFadyen’s Silver Fox/Charlottetown rink, will face the Leslie Noye rink from the host Western Community Curling Club in Monday’s 9 a.m. men’s A final.

Meanwhile, defending women’s champion Katie Fullerton from Cornwall cruised to a 7-0 lead after six ends, before the Alyssa Wright Crapaud/Montague rink scored three over the next two ends. Fullerton responded with four in the ninth to bring out the handshakes. The final score was 11-3.

Fullerton will meet Lauren Lenentine’s Cornwall rink in Monday morning’s women’s A final. Lenentine opened play Sunday morning with an 8-2 win over fellow Cornwall rink Lauren Moerike.
