Islanders are invited to join the 32nd annual Curl for Cancer event in Montague this Sunday,January 31st.  It’s an opportunity for both beginners and those with lots of curling experience to enjoy a social event while raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Curl for Cancer was started in PEI in the mid 80’s by Carole Kennedy, and now takes place across Canada each year in support of advancing cancer issues.

This year the planning committee, led by Mary and Robyn MacDonald, for Curl for Cancer in Montague chose to honour a longtime member of the Montague Curling Club, Carol Sullivan, who lost her battle with cancer this past year. “It’s so great that everyone comes together to support the cancer cause,” says Larry Richards, Manager, Montague Curling Club. “Cancer affects every family on PEI in one way or another. It’s good to give back and every dollar raised helps in the fight against cancer.”

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, January 31st, with the second annual 1 km or 5 km Fun Run in honour of Carol Sullivan and organized by her sister-in-law Linda Roach-Cunningham.  Curling starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes all day. There will also be a bake sale, and thanks to the support of local businesses, many great items to be won in a silent auction.  All events are open to the public so feel free to stop by to and check it out.

“We hope everyone in Montague is proud to have created such a long-standing event,” says executive director Lori Barker.  “I am especially proud that Curl for Cancer was initially developed in Prince Edward Island and has been replicated by almost every province across the country.”

With the support and generosity of participants and volunteers, last year alone Curl for Cancer Montague raised over $4,000 which was used to support Islanders dealing with cancer.
