Newson, who was a finalist in both the A and B sections of the modified triple knockout draw, and won the “C”, earned a bye to the final, while “A” section winner MacKenzie eliminated “B” winner Mitchell Schut from Cornwall with a 7-4 win in the morning semi-final to advance to the deciding game.
In the final, Newson, whose team includes third Melissa Morrow, second Andrew MacDougall, and lead stone Miranda Ellis, had a 4-1 lead at the fourth end break, scoring singles in the first two ends and a deuce in the fourth. MacKenzie, who was also a finalist last year, narrowed the gap to 1 with a deuce in the fifth, but a Newson triple in the sixth put him ahead 7-3. MacKenzie was kept to a single in seven, and ran out of rocks in the eighth.
