The 12th annual Fall Fling Maritime Junior Cashspiel at the Silver Fox is down to the 1 pm junior men’s and junior women’s finals, and will have a PEI team in both games.
On the Junior Women’s side, the Lauren Ferguson team from the Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Crapaud clubs, who were finalists last year, will be taking on the Kate Paterson squad from the Carleton Curling Club in Saint John, while PEI’s Ryan Abraham, with third Tyler Smith, will be playing Ethan Young, Abraham’s former clubmate from the Mayflower in Halifax.
In the semis, Ferguson stole a single in the 9th and a deuce in the 10th end in an 11-7 win over the Kayee Nodding team from the CFB Halifax club, while Paterson stole a triple in the 10th in a 10-4 win over Allie MacNutt from the Truro Curling Club. Abraham beat Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team 8-3 in 7 ends, with Schut getting off to a bad start, giving up a first end steal of three. In the Battle of Halifax, Young outlasted clubmate Mitchell Cortello in what Team Young described as “an epic three hour tilt” by an 8-5 score with help from a four-point third end.
The winning teams from the 1 pm finals will take home $700, with the runners-up receiving $350. The non-advancing semi-finalists (Nodding, MacNutt, Mitchell Schut, and Cortello) each collect $150. 12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part in this annual cashspiel, organized by Sheila Compton.
