PEI rinks capture Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel titles

The 12th Annual Fall Fling Maritime Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox in Summerside, with Island rinks winning both divisions. In the Junior Women’s final the Cornwall, Charlottetown and Crapaud team skipped by Lauren Ferguson, who were last year’s runners-up, won by a 9-5 score over the Kate Paterson rink from the Carleton Curling Club in Saint John NB, with Ferguson stealing a triple and a deuce in ends six and seven, while the Charlottetown Curling Club rink skipped by Tyler Smith, with Ryan Abraham throwing final stones, beat the Ethan Young team from the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax by a 5-3 score in the low-scoring junior men’s final, with Young scoring the only deuce, in end seven of the eight end contest.

In the semis, Ferguson stole a single in the 9th and a deuce in the 10th end in an 11-7 win over the Kayee Nodding team from the CFB Halifax club, while Paterson stole a triple in the 10th in a 10-4 win over Allie MacNutt from the Truro Curling Club. Abraham beat Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team 8-3 in 7 ends, with Schut getting off to a bad start, giving up a first end steal of three. In the Battle of Halifax, Young outlasted clubmate Mitchell Cortello by an 8-5 score with help from a four-point third end. The Nodding, MacNutt, Mitchell Schut, and Cortello teams all receive $150 for their playoff finishes.

Ferguson, Paterson, Cortello and Abraham all finished round robin play on Saturday with 5 wins and no losses, while MacNutt and Young both had four wins and a loss, and Nodding and Schut had 3 wins against two losses.

Here’s how the other PEI teams fared in the round robin: the Sydney Howatt junior women’s team from Cornwall finished just out of the playoffs in their pool with a 3-1 record, while their clubmates the Rachel MacLean and Emily Sanderson rinks went 1-4. In the junior men’s section, Devin Schut from Cornwall also went 1-4, while the young Cruz Pineau team from the host club picked up lots of experience, but no wins.

12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part in this annual cashspiel, organized by Sheila Compton. End by end results are available at PEICurling.com
