Team Birt advances to Windsor Cashspiel semis

PEI’s Suzanne Birt team stole 3 points in the 7th end in an 8-2 routing of the Nancy McConnery rink of Halifax in this morning’s quarter-final round of the 15 team $13,000 purse Tim Hortons Spitfire Arms Women’s Cashspiel, which wraps up this afternoon at the Windsor Curling Club in Nova Scotia. Birt now faces Colleen Jones in the 11 am semis, with Moncton’s Sylvie Robichaud taking on Haligonian Julie McEvoy in the other semi-final contest.  Robichaud doubled the Jill Brothers rink from Halifax, which includes Islander Erin Carmody at 3rd, by a 4-2 score in the quarters. The final is at 2 pm.

Three PEI teams were entered, with the Birt foursome advancing to this morning’s quarter-finals after finishing round robin play at the top of their pool with a perfect 4-0 record. The Veronica Smith team got off to a great opening day start, at 2-0, but lost their next two games, and finished at an even 2-2 win-loss, while the Sarah Fullerton foursome went 1-3. The Katelyn Jones World Junior Champion team from Halifax, which includes Islander Lauren Lenentine finished out of the playoffs with a 2-2 record.
