Murphy’s Pharmacies “Ice Queens” Women’s Funspiel at Cornwall attracts 12 teams

The annual Murphy’s Pharmacies Ice Queens Funspiel was held November 23rd, 2019 at the Cornwall Curling Club with 12 teams participating (up from 8 teams last year) and notably, a number of teams from other clubs. Myrna Sanderson, once again, was drawmaster.

Matos Winery donated a basket with a bottle of red wine and other goodies for which we sold tickets. The winner of the basket was Shelley Woods. There were several door prizes on hand as well, including Cornwall Curling Club gift certificates, a couple of bottles of Matos wine, a “designer” scarf and a spa gift card.

Gloria Clarke and Arleen Harris from the winning team

Each team played one six-end game then two four-end games in round-robin format. Winners of the event were Gloria Clarke, Janice Murdoch, Janette Fraser and Arleen Harris. These ladies will have their names inscribed on the  Murphy’s Ice Queens Trophy and each won a $50 Murphy’s gift card.

(L-R):  Marjorie Matthews, Jean Sinclair, Sharon Campbell, 2nd place winners

Second place $25 Murphy’s gift cards were awarded to Jean Sinclair, Sharon Campbell, Marjorie Matthews and Amanda MacIntosh. We also had Cornwall Curling Club gift certificates as prizes for the teams who won brain teasers- 1. Shirley Berry, Angela Sanderson, Lacey Gallant and Patricia Boland and 2. Kathy Thompson, Patsy McCarville, Marlene Proude, and Jessie MacPhail.

The ladies were treated to morning treats of freshly-baked muffins, cinnamon rolls and biscuits with coffee; then a  lunch of soup and sandwiches and cookies. For our closing, we switched it up this year and had chef Jen McKenna of Creative Kitchen prepare delicious appetizers, which were a huge success.

This event would not have been so successful without the generosity of our sponsor, Murphy’s Pharmacies as well as the ongoing support we have had from Matos Winery. We are greatly appreciative to our club manager, Lori Fitzpatrick who decorated the club beautifully and made the chicken soup and chili, and was kept busy throughout the event. We also had help from many members who pitched in when needed. Other big thank-yous go out to Al MacCormac who maintained the ice on a tight schedule and to Debby Sigsworth who tended bar.

We are very thankful to everyone who participated and helped out with this event!
