The announcement was made during TSN’s live broadcast of the Home Hardware Canada Cup women’s final in Leduc, Alta.
“This has been one of my goals since I joined Curling Canada in 2016, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes with our stakeholders went into making today’s announcement possible,” said Henderson. “We’ve long known that our athletes should compensated similarly because they all work extremely hard to reach their high levels of performance. We were excited to make that happen for this year’s events.”
Both the Tim Hortons Brier (scheduled for Feb. 29-March 8 in Kingston, Ont.) and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts (scheduled for Feb. 15-23 in Moose Jaw, Sask.) will offer total purses of $300,000 to the competing teams.
At the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier, the total purse, including prize money, sponsorship cresting compensation and per-win payments, was $293,000, with the winning team earning a total of $100,500.
At the Scotties, the total purse (prize money, sponsorship, per-win payments) was $165,000, with the winning team earning $59,000. The winning Scotties team also received jewelry from sponsor Kruger Products, and that will be the case again in 2020.
Additionally, the Tim Hortons Brier and Scotties champions earned Sport Canada funding, nearly $170,000 per team over two years, which again will be the case for the 2020 winners.
