Dalhousie Tigers sweep AUS men’s and women’s curling championships (AUS Sport)

(HALIFAX, N.S.) The Dalhousie Tigers swept the men’s and women’s titles at the 2020 Subway AUS Curling Championships, presented by Keep It Social, being hosted by the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the CFB Halifax Curling Club.

On the men’s side it was first-place Memorial (4-0) versus second-place Dalhousie (3-1) while the women’s final saw first-place Dalhousie (5-0) take on second-place UNB (3-2). 

The Tigers men’s team knocked off Memorial 9-2 in four ends. Memorial led 1-0 after a single in the first end. Dalhousie answered back with five in the second and four in the fourth after Memorial scored a single in the third. 

This is Dalhousie’s third AUS title in a row and fourth in five years.

The Tigers were represented by skip Matthew Manuel, Owen Purcell, Jeffrey Meagher and Adam McEachren. They were coached by Anthony Purcell.

Skip Greg Blyde, along with Daniel Bruce, Ryan McNeil Lamswood and Benjamin Stringer represented Memorial. 

In the women’s championship, Dalhousie defeated the UNB Reds 7-4 in seven ends. The Tigers scored two points in the first end, which were followed by singles from UNB in the second. Dalhousie added one in both the third and fourth ends to lead 4-1. 

UNB came back with two points in the fifth end to trail Dalhousie 4-3. The sixth end saw three points from the Tigers, increasing their lead to 7-3. UNB ended the scoring with a single point in the seventh end. 

With the win, the Tigers captured their second consecutive AUS curling title and their third in five years.

Dalhousie was represented by skip Kristin Clarke, along with teammates Lindsey Burgess, Kate Callaghan, Sarah Gierling and Madison Johnson. The Tigers were coached by Mike Callaghan. 

The UNB Reds were represented by skip Justine Comeau, and teammates Erica Cluff, Keira McLaughlin, Meghan Beland and Brigitte Comeau. The Reds were coached by Tim Comeau. 

All four finalists have earned berths into the U SPORTS national championship being held March 11-15 in Portage la Prairie, Man.
