Island players out in semi-finals as AUS ch’ships wrap up at 10 am at CFB Halifax

(HALIFAX, N.S. – AtlanticUniversitySport.com) – The men’s and women’s finals are set in the 2020 Subway AUS Curling Championships, presented by Keep It Social, being hosted by the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the CFB Halifax Curling Club.

On the men’s side, top-seeded Memorial defeated UNB 9-1 in five ends as the Sea-Hawks scored doubles in the first two ends for a 4-0 lead. UNB (which includes PEI’s Alex Gallant and Parker MacFadyen) scored a single in the third as five more points in the last two ends for Memorial sealed the win. 

In the second semifinal, Dalhousie outlasted SMU 7-3 in seven ends. SMU (which includes Islander Colin MacKenzie at lead) scored one in the first then the Tigers scored two each in the second and third ends. Another single for SMU in the fourth end trimmed Dal’s lead to 4-2. Dal added two more points in the fifth end and both teams traded singles in the sixth and final end. 

Over on the women’s bracket, the top-seeded Dalhousie Tigers knocked off the host SMU Huskies 8-1 in six ends. Dal built a fast 5-0 lead after three ends. SMU scored a single in the fourth as the Tigers scored three in the sixth end. 

UNB upended Mount A 5-3 in nine ends. UNB led 2-0 after three ends and Mount A got a single on the board in the fifth end. Both teams scored singles through eight ends at 3-3. UNB scored two in the ninth for the 5-3 match win.

All four finalists earn berths into the U SPORTS national championship March 11-15 in Portage la Prairie, Man.
