Hope rinks win PEI Masters “B” Qualifiers

The Bill Hope men’s rink and defending champion Sandy Hope women’s team rebounded from losses in the “A” qualifying games for the Monday Championship Round, to beat “A” Qualifier winners Lou Nowlan and Shirley Berry in the “B” Qualifier games Saturday afternoon at the PEI Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, being played at the Montague Curling Club. The Hope and Berry teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the Nowlan squad are from the Silver Fox in Summerside.

In the Saturday morning Men’s “B” semi-finals, Nowlan got by Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault foursome by a 5-3 score, while Bill Hope beat O’Leary’s Clair Sweet 9-2 to advance to the 2 pm “B” Qualifier.

The Women’s “B” semi saw Sandy Hope team score six points in the 7th end in a 12-4 victory over the Bev Harding rink from the host club.

The “C” semis and qualifier games go Sunday at 9:30 am and 2 pm. In the women’s semis, Harding and Berry play off at 9:30 am with the winner taking on Sandy Hope at 2 pm with the final spot in the Championship Round on the line. On the men’s side, it’s Sweet vs Nowlan, and Hope playing Arsenault at 9:30 with the winners playing in the “C” Qualifier at 2.

The two-game Championship Round between the winners of the three Qualifier rounds goes Monday at 9:30 am and, if needed,  2 pm. 

Under the modified triple knockout format, a team can win more than one section,  A two-section winner will have a “double life” in the championship round, and win the event if they take either section, while their opponent, the winner of the other section, would have to win both.

The men’s and women’s winning teams, or finalist teams if they are unable to attend, earn the right to compete in the 2021 Canadian Masters Curling Championships, November 17-21, 2021 at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg, Man.

Four men’s and three women’s teams began play Friday in this event.
