Shirley Berry makes big comeback to win PEI Masters Women’s title

The Shirley Berry team, trailing their Cornwall Curling clubmates the Sandy Hope rink by a 6-2 score after five ends of play, scored five points in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead, stole a single in the seventh end, and kept the Hope squad to a single in the 8th to win the Monday afternoon deciding game in the PEI Masters (age 60 and over) Women’s Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Club by an 8-7 score. Bill Hope and his Cornwall team won the Men’s title in the morning draw over Lou Nowlan, who has been on the winning team as skip or third for this event the last 10 times, and 15 times in total. Berry, then with Sandy Hope at third stone, previously won the women’s title in 2012, 2014, and 2015, while Hope skipped the winning team the last five years.

Winning Shirley Berry team (L-R):  Shirley Berry (skip), Karen Currie (third), Gloria Turner (2nd), Linda Fairhurst (lead)

Berry, who won two of the three Modified Triple Knockout sections, needed to win one of the two Monday games to take the title, while Sandy Hope would have had to win both. Berry lost a close morning game by a 6-5 score, to bring the event to a deciding game.

Finalist team (L-R): Sandy Hope (skip), Shelley Ebbett (3rd), Karen Hardy (2nd), Arleen Harris (lead)

The Bill Hope and Shirley Berry teams, or the corresponding finalist rink if unable to attend, earn the right to compete in the 2021 Canadian Masters Curling Championships, November 17-21, 2021 at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg, Man.

Four men’s and three women’s teams began play Friday in this event.
