Peter Gallant-coached Team Kim advances to Saville Shoot-Out semis, Adam Casey and Team Gunnlaugson are in Stu Sells Oakville quarter-finals

Two of the three teams featuring Islanders that are participating in weekend cashspiels have advanced to Monday championship round play.

Team Jason Gunnlaugson from Manitoba, which includes PEI’s Adam Casey at third stone, take on Scotland’s Bruce Mouat rink in the 9:30 am (all times Atlantic) quarter-finals of the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard in Ontario. Gunnlaugson finished 4-2 in the 24 team qualifying round. The team lost their opener 7-3 to Colton Flasch (Saskatoon, SK), then responded with a 6-1 win over Jeremy Harty (Calgary, AB). Gunnlaugson then won 7-4 against Karsten Sturmay (Edmonton, AB) but lost 7-1 against Flasch. Gunnlaugson responded with a 4-3 win over Harty to advance to the C-Qualifier which they won 6-2 against Korey Dropkin (Duluth, MN) to advance to the playoff round in their final qualifying round match. The semi-finals go at 12:30 pm, with the final at 3:30.

At the Alberta Curling Series: Saville Shoot-Out in Edmonton, South Korea’s Team Kim, coached in this event by PEI’s Peter Gallant, has advanced to the 3:30 pm Atlantic semifinals of the 16-team event, where they will battle 2016 and 2018 event winner Casey Scheidegger (Lethbridge, AB) for a spot into the championship game. Kim finished 4-0 in the qualifying round and advanced through the quarterfinals with an 8-7 win over 2019 event champion Kerri Einarson (Gimli, MB). In their opening game, Kim defeated Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB) 10-4, then won 7-3 against Jessie Hunkin (North Battleford, SK), 6-2 against Elysa Crough (Edmonton, AB), and 5-3 against the Mackenzie Zacharias (Altona, MB) team, which includes PEI’s Lauren Lenentine, in their final qualifying round match.

The Zacharias rink finished 3-1 in the qualifying round and needed a tiebreaker to advance to the playoffs, but they lost that game 7-2 to Edmonton’s Laura Walker rink. Video: https://www.facebook.com/teamzacharias/videos/283371896593085

In their opening game, Team Zacharias defeated Crough 6-2,  then won 7-4 against Sturmay and
7-3 vs. Hunkin, but lost 5-3 against Kim (Gangneung, KOR) in their final qualifying round match.
