2022 PEI Mixed Doubles and U16 Curling Championships

Cornwall’s Isaiah Dalton team wins PEI U16 Championship, Edward and Jenny White from the Summerside Curling Club sweep PEI Mixed Doubles Ch’ship

The 2022 PEI Mixed Doubles championship wrapped up on Saturday, while the 2022 PEI U16 Curling Championship concluded on Sunday afternoon. Both events were held at the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex in Summerside. 

PEI U16 Championship

The Ella Lenentine rink from Cornwall finished U16 Round Robin play in 1st place with a 4-1 win-loss record, earning a bye to the 2 pm final. Three rinks, skipped by Isaiah Dalton (Cornwall), Sydney Carver (Montague), and Madalyn Easter, (S’Side) had 3-2 records, with Dalton (2nd place) and Carver (3rd place) advancing to the 10 am semi-final after tiebreaking rules. Dalton, who also won the U18 Boys event this season with the same team, won the semi-final against Carver 7-6 in an extra end and then defeated Lenentine (who won the U18 Girl’s event) 6-3 in the final.

Robbie Lenentine, coach of his daughter Ella’s team, won the Coaching award, while Luke Butler, who spared the entire weekend on the Carver team, won the Sportsmanship award. Reid Hart (photo not available), from Summerside’s Easter rink, had the highest score in the Singles Curling event, scoring 35 points out of a possible 36.

PEI Mixed Doubles Championship

The Edward and Jenny White couple from the host club, who previously won the event in 2020, swept the 4-team Mixed Doubles event, winning all six of their games, including the 3 modified-triple knockout section finals, all against the Cornwall team of Alison Griffin and Colin MacKenzie, to bring the event to an early conclusion, making the two-game championship round unnecessary.

Ed and Jenny White win PEI Mixed Doubles “A” Qualifier, Dalton team 2-0 at PEI U16 Ch’ship, both in S’Side. Spectators welcome!

The 2022 PEI Mixed Doubles and the 2022 PEI U16 Curling Championships got underway Friday April 8th at the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex in Summerside. 

The Mixed Doubles has 4 teams registered and is playing a modified triple knockout format with a 2 game playoff (unless a team wins all 3 sections). Last year’s champions, the MacFadyen siblings, and finalists, the White husband and wife team, are both entered.

In Mixed Doubles action Friday, the Whites, from the host club, won the Mixed Doubles “A” section final 9-7 over Cornwall’s Colin MacKenzie and Alison Griffin team, The two teams will also meet in the “B” section final, Saturday at 10 am. The “C” semi-finals go Saturday at 1:15 pm, with the “C” final following at 4:30 pm. The 2 game Championship round, if needed, goes Sunday at 10 am and 2 pm.

The Isaiah Dalton squad from Cornwall is 2-0 in U16 round-robin play, while four teams are 1-1, and the Gallant rink is 0-2. The 2 game Championship round goes Sunday at 10 am and 2 pm.
