PEI Men, NB Women, win Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, presented by Sylvan Learning

PEI’s Alex Matters rink wins Under 18 Men’s

The PEI rink of Alex Matters, Chris Gallant, Kyle Holland, and Andrew Cameron, with coaches Peter Gallant and Derrick Cameron, who curl out of the host Charlottetown Curling Club, scored four points in the first end on the way to a 9-3 victory over the Jordan Craft rink of the Thistle St. Andrews club in Saint John New Brunswick to win this afternoon’s men’s final of the Atlantic 18 and Under curling championship, presented by Sylvan Learning. Gallant throws fourth rocks for the team, with Matters calling the game. Other members of the runner-up Craft team are Andrew O’Dell, Joey Gregan, and Ryan Freeze, with coach Joanne Freeze. Both teams finished round robin play with 3-1 records. with Matters finishing in first place in the round robin by virture of their 6-5 win over Craft in the opening draw.

In the men’s consolation final, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Stephen Trickett rink from the St. John’s Curling Club beat the PEI Host team, skipped by Jeffrey Taylor from the Cornwall Curling Club, by a 5-2 score. Taylor finished third in the round robin with a 2-2 record, ahead of the Trickett rink, and Nova Scotia’s Jonathan Crouse foursome, skipped by Jonathan Crouse, who both had 1-3 records. The Trickett team beat the Crouse rink 10-3 in the final round robin draw, and advanced to the consolation final against Taylor. Playing with Trickett were Adam Boland, Ryan Kelly, and Zach Young, with coach Eugene Trickett. Rounding out the Taylor team are Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut, with coaches AJ Campbell and Bryan Sutherland.

New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle team goes undefeated to win Under 18 Women’s

New Brunswick’s Thistle Saint Andrews club rink of Jessica Daigle, Natalie Menzies, Krista Flanagan, and Kaleigh Barry, with coach Allan Menzies, were trailing 4-1 after three ends, but fought back with triples in ends four and six as they edged the Emily Dwyer team from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club by an 8-7 score this afternoon to win the women’s division. Completing the Dwyer rink are Amanda Colter, Katrina MacKinnon, and Laura Kennedy, with coach Marc Brophy. The New Brunswick rink went undefeated in the event, finishing the round robin with a perfect 4-0 record, while Nova Scotia went 3-1, losing 8-2 to New Brunswick in the opening round robin draw..

The women’s consolation final was between the two Island rinks, Team PEI, the Amanda MacLean rink from O’Leary, who finished the round robin at 2-2, and the Veronica Smith Host Team foursome from Cornwall, who went 1-3 in round robin play, ahead of winless Newfoundland and Labrador. The Smith team, which includes Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith, came out the winners, by a 6-4 score, stealing singles in three ends. Other members of the MacLean team are Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray, and Aleya Quilty, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shelley Gray.

The top age 18 and Under teams from across Atlantic Canada, plus the PEI provincial runners-up, competing as the Host teams, took part in the annual championship, the location of which alternates annually between the four Atlantic provinces.

RULES & GUIDELINES  FOR U 18 ATLANTIC

 

  1. CCA rulebook for officiated play will govern play (2010-2012)  
  2. Umpires
  • An Umpire will be assigned for each draw and designated as the “head-umpire”. All decisions of the head-umpire” are final.
  • The umpire will perform all measurements.

 

  1. Game Duration
  • Games are 8 ends; a 5 minute break will take place after the 4th end.
  • A break of 3 minutes will occur after the 8th end if an extra end is needed to decide the outcome.
  • Teams have two 1 minute Coach Times per game. Teams will have 15 seconds of stop time for Ice Shed access.
  • Each team will be entitled to an additional 1 minute Coach Time during the extra end.
  • Clocks are being used.  Each team will be allocated 59 minutes for 8 ends, 8 minutes for an extra end.
  • The delivering team’s clock shall continue to run until:
  1. All stones have come to rest in play or have crossed the back line, and
  2. The sweepers and player who has just delivered have moved to the extreme side of the sheet, and
  3. The delivering team has relinquished control of the house.  At this time, the opposing team becomes the delivering team and their clock shall be started.  In the event of a throw through or hog line violation, the delivering team’s clock shall continue to run until the stone has crossed the far back line.
  • At the conclusion of each end, both clocks shall be stopped and only restarted when the first rock of the next end reaches the near T-line or instructed to do so by an Umpire.
  • In the event of a Free Guard Zone measurement, the clock shall be stopped.  This will be an official Time Out and will not be considered in each teams’ Coach Time.
  • A period of dead-time (approx 1 min) will occur between ends when neither clock is running.
  • Consequences of running out of time are per the CCA rulebook (2010-2012) for officiated play.
  • Teams must be at the rink 35 minutes prior to game time for the coin toss for rock color or last practice.
  • Approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled draw time, there will a 10 minute practice ; 9 minutes will be for practice or 8 rocks up and 8 rocks back, whichever occurs first.  The last minute will be a “Draw to the Button” for hammer and possibly for placement.    

 

5.  Play-offs

     The top 2 teams in each section (Men’s, Women's) will advance to the Championship finals.

     The 3rd and 4th place teams will advance to the consolation. Due to time constraints, there will be no tie breaker games. Ties will be resolved by:

       - head to head records

       - if head to head cannot resolve, then the draws to the button, from pre-game practices will be used.

 

6. Teams

  • Teams are composed of 4 players; though a team may play with 3. No 5th players.
  • Prior to game, team’s must report any line-up or rotation changes to officials.
  • A spare pool will be provided.
  • SUBSTITUTE and SPARES

Spares or substitutes may ONLY be used due to illness, injury or other circumstances deemed extenuating.

a) A team shall include a minimum of two players from the original team.

b) When a player is unable to play because of illness, accident or other extenuating circumstances deemed reasonable, the team may:

(i) Play with the remaining three players, the first two players each delivering three stones in each end.

(ii) Choose a player from the Spare Pool.
