Howard wins junior men's

On Monday afternoon the Meaghan Hughes team from the Cornwall and Charlottetown curling clubs was the repeat Champion and three time Pepsi Provincial Junior Women Champions. She and her team mates of Kendra Cameron, Sinead Dolan, and Michala Robison were able to control the final ends to advance to the Karcher Canadian Junior Championships in Fredericton NB with a 6-5 win over Cornwall's Danielle Sharkey rink.

On the Junior Men's side, the outstanding play of the Steve Howard team, who also play out of both Cornwall and Charlottetown, continued to impress all with their consistancy and shot making. Defending champion Brett Gallant's team faced an opposition that just kept getting stronger and stronger as the championship continued. Steve, Tyler Mackenzie, Peter Girvan, Jeremy Cameron, who defeated the Charlottetown Gallant rink 5-0 this afternoon, go on to Frederiction for the Karchers' from the 5th to the 13th of February. Both teams are going to be excellent representative of the province and carry our colours with pride.
A number of awards were presented at the closing ceremonies of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Cornwall Curling Club on Monday. Brenda MacMillan, former PEI Curling Association Juniors Coordinator was presented with a special appreciation award by Shirley Lank of the PEI CA Executive.

Asham Coaching Awards were presented to Gerry van Ouwerkerk of Summerside, and Gayle Johnston of Charlottetown.

Awards for fairplay in curling were presented to Anson Carmody and Anita Casey from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, members of the Nick van Ouwerkerk, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk rinks.

FINALS SET FOR PEPSI PROVINCIAL JUNIORS
Tremendously exciting games were witnessed by the many spectators and family watching the semi final matches Sunday evening.
With the Junior women going into an extra end, both teams, Sharkey and Aylward, played shot for shot. Though the Aylward team was exceptional, the Danielle Sharkey team was flawless in the last few ends to steal the victory.
The junior mens match between the Gallant and van Ouwerkerk teams was also a thriller, with the only lapse being in the 7th end when the Brett Gallant team connected for a 4 ender. The Nick van Ouwerkerk team fought back but were run out of stones in the 10th end.
With the finals going tomorrow at 1 pm, the match ups are club mates Charlottetown Cornwall Meaghan Hughes team against the Cornwall Danielle Sharkey crew; while it is the Charlottetown Brett Gallant meeting the Charlottetown Cornwall Steve Howard team.
Finals start at 1 pm, as both the Hughes and Howard rinks have yet to be defeated, they could have a second draw at 6 pm.
Tie Breaker set for 4:30 pm Sunday
The team of Nick van Ouwerkerk curling out of the Silver Fox Yacht & Curling Club, finished the Round Robin tied for third with the Sean Clarey rink out of Montague Curling Club. In the Round Robin portion, their game was won by van Ouwerkerk. The Steve Howard rink, finishing with an unblemished record at 5 wins 0 losses, goes directly to the final where he will have to be beat twice in order not to advance to the Karcher Canadian Junior Championship. Brett Gallant and his rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club await the winner of the tie-breaker, for their semi-final game at 8 pm this evening. It's on to the semi finals in the Pepsi Juniors for the Nick van Ouwerkerk team after a close, well played game against the Sean Clarey rink. In the 8 pm this evening's match they will be playing second place finisher, Brett Gallant out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, for the right to advance to Monday's finals against the Steve Howard foursome at 1 pm. At the completion of the Junior Women Round Robin the Meaghan Hughes rink of Skip Meaghan,3rd Kendra Cameron, 2nd Sinead Dolan, and lead Michala Robison have the opportunity to advance to their third consecutive Karcher Canadian Junior Championship. With their win over the Silver Fox team of Jessica van Ouwerkerk, Anita Casey, Dannielle Chiasson, and Madeline Campbell, the Hughes team now awaits the outcome of the semi final Sunday evening at 8 pm between the Vanessa Aylward team curling out of the Silver Fox and the Cornwall Curling Club Danielle Sharkey crew. The winner of the game will go on and meet the Hughes team in the 1 pm on Monday match. The Hughes team will need to be beat twice to be denied their third appearance. Saturday was another excellent day of curling at the Cornwall Curling Club. The junior women were at the top of their form, lead by the Meaghan Hughes' team, undefeated after four rounds. Behind her there are a lot of possibilities for tie-breakers in Sunday's games. The Vanessa Aylward team is presently 2nd but the Danielle Sharkey and Lynn Anne James rinks just behind at 2 & 2. On the junior men's side, the Steve Howard rink continues to shine with a win in both matches Saturday, to move to 4-0, while the win by Nick van Ouwerkerk over the Sean Clarey team brought them back to the pack with a lot of possibilities for tie-breakers in sight. In Saturday play, Howard, son of two-time world champion Russ Howard, with 2003 PEI champ Tyler MacKenzie at third, edged defending champion Brett Gallant 4-3, and scored two 4-enders en route to an 11-1 win over Sean Noonan. Gallant and Noonan are from the Charlottetown club. Nick van Ouwerkerk of Summerside handed Sean Clarey of Montague his first loss, by a 9-6 score. Both rinks are at 3-1. Gallant is at 2-2, while Noonan and Charlottetown's Timothy Cullen are at 0-4. Meaghan Hughes had a 7-4 win over Lynn Anne James of Charlottetown, and an 8-4 victory over Danielle Sharkey of the host club. Vanessa Aylward of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, has rebounded from her loss to Hughes in the first draw, and is in second place at 3-1, after recording a 7-5 win over Sharkey, and a 10-4 victory over Erinn MacDougall of Cornwall. Sharkey and James are next at 2-2, followed by Jessica van Ouwerkerk of Summerside at 1-3, and MacDougall at 0-4. Teams finishing 1st in round-robin receive a bye to the final. If they are undefeated in round-robin, they would have to be beaten twice in the finals, forcing a 6 PM game. Teams finishing 2nd and 3rd in the round-robin play each other in the semi-finals, with the winner advancing to the final. The eventual winners will advance to the Karcher Canadian Juniors February 5-13 in Fredericton NB.
