This is a repeat provincial title for Ferguson, who has a new team this year, with third Sydney Howatt, second Kristie Rogers, and lead Rachel O’Connor, along with coach Pat Quilty. The Ferguson foursome will join the Junior Men’s winners, the Tyler Smith squad from the Montague Curling Rink at the  2020 New Holland Canadian junior championships in Langley, BC from January 18-26. Other members of the Rachel MacLean finalist team are third Amy Spence, second Avery Nicholson, and lead Izzy Tatlock, with coach Carl Nicholson.

Ferguson won two of the event’s three sections and would have won the championship with a win in either of the two championship round games, but only needed the first. In this afternoon’s match, Ferguson, who won six of her seven games in the event, losing only to MacLean, opened with a single, and stole a deuce and two singles before letting MacLean on the board with a deuce, leading 5-2  heading into the fifth end break. MacLean stole a single in the sixth, but singles in the next three ends gave Ferguson an 8-3 lead and the game. On Sunday morning, Ferguson took the “C” final of the modified triple-knockout draw with a close 5-4 win over the Katie Shaw team.

Also on Sunday morning, the Tyler Smith team maintained their unbeaten record into the “C” final, where they defeated the Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall by a 10-6 score. Because Smith won all three sections of the draw, the championship round was not needed.

Tyler Smith rink goes undefeated to repeat as Pepsi PEI Jr Men’s Champs, Ferguson 1 win away from repeat jr women’s title

Just like last year, it was another sweep for the Tyler Smith foursome from the Montague Curling Rink at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship, winning a repeat title on Sunday morning at the Crapaud Community Curling Club with a come-from-behind 10-6 decision over Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut squad. Under the rules, a championship round is not required when a team wins all three sections of the modified triple-knockout draw.

Team Schut finalist rink (L-R): Mitchell Schut, Chase MacMillan, Liam Kelly, Cruz Pineau, Brenda MacMillan (coach)

Schut had a 5-3 lead at the 5th end break, and stole a sixth end single to lead by three points, but Smith kept the Cornwall team off the scoreboard after that, following a pair of deuces with a single and another deuce to win 10-6. Other members of the winning Smith rink are third Ryan Abraham, second stone Jake Flemming, and lead Ryan Lowery, with Tyler’s father Kevin Smith coaching. Rounding out the Schut foursome was third Chase MacMillan, second Liam Kelly, and lead Cruz Pineau, with coach Brenda MacMillan. Schut finished play with a 2-3 win-loss record, while the third team in the junior men’s event, skipped by Brayden Snow out of the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling clubs went 0-3.

Lauren Ferguson

Meanwhile, defending champion skip Lauren Ferguson, playing with a new team this year, will have two chances for a repeat Junior Women’s title, with a championship round win at either 2 or 7 pm, as she won two of the three modified triple knockout draw sections (A and C) while opposing skip Rachel MacLean and her team, who won the B section, would have to win both games. All four teams in the Junior Women’s section are from the Cornwall Curling Club. In this morning’s “C” final, the Ferguson rink edged the Katie Shaw team 5-4.

The Tyler Smith rink and the winner of the Junior Women’s championship will represent PEI at the  2020 New Holland Canadian junior championships in Langley, BC from January 18-26.

Smith rink one Sunday win away from Pepsi Jr. Men’s repeat, MacLean takes Jr. Women’s B final

In the Pepsi Junior Curling Championships at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, the Tyler Smith rink from the Montague Curling Rink have now captured both the A and B divisions of the modified triple knockout draw, and needs just one win out of a possible three games on Sunday to repeat as Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s Champions, while their opponent, the winner of a 3 o’clock game this afternoon between Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut squad and the Brayden Snow foursome from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox would have to win all three — the “C” final at 9 am Sunday, followed by both championship round games, at 2 and 7 pm. Smith scored a triple and two four enders in an 11-2 decision over Schut on Saturday morning to win the “B” final.

Meanwhile, there are separate winners of the “A” and “B” sections of the four-team (all from the Cornwall Curling Club) junior women’s division, with defending champion Lauren Ferguson and her new team winning the “A”, but the Rachel MacLean rink, aided by an 8th end triple, beating Team Ferguson 8-5 in the “B” final. Ferguson takes on Clara Jack, while MacLean faces Katie Shaw in “C” semi-final action at 3 pm, with the winners advancing to the “C” final at 9 am Sunday. The Championship Round games go Sunday at 2 and, if needed, 7 pm.

Three draws are complete after opening day play at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with three junior men’s and four junior women’s teams competing to represent PEI at the 2020 New Holland Canadian junior  championships in Langley, BC from January 18-26.

Friday Afternoon “A” Finals

Lauren Ferguson

Defending champion skips Lauren Ferguson from the Cornwall Curling Club (all four junior women’s rinks are from that club) and Tyler Smith from the Montague Curling rink captured the “A” finals of the modified triple knockout draw. Ferguson, trailing 4-3 after 5 ends of play after 4 ends against clubmate Clara Jack 9-5, came on strong in the second half, with a four-point sixth end and a stolen single in the seventh. After exchanging singles in the next two ends, Jack ran out of rocks in the final frame. Final score: 9-5 for Ferguson.

Tyler Smith

On the junior men’s side, in a game that saw no more than two points scored in an end, Smith had a 4-2 lead after 5 ends and kept the Brayden Snow team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown clubs to a single in six before taking control in the next three ends with a deuce, a stolen single, and a steal of two points to bring the game to handshakes with a 9-3 score after nine ends.

Friday Evening “B” Semi-finals

Team Ferguson punched their ticket to the 10 am Saturday “B” final with a 7-3 win in the evening draw over the Katie Shaw rink, which includes three members of Ferguson’s team from last year. Ferguson had a slim one-point lead after eight ends, but a triple steal in the ninth gave her the win. She’ll be taking on  Rachel MacLean that “B” final. Team MacLean scored a trio of triples in their match against the Clara Jack foursome for a 12-3 victory in eight ends.

On the Junior Men’s side, Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut squad were firing on all cylinders in their Draw Three game against Team Snow, winning 13-2 in 7 ends, and are hoping to avenge their 8-1 opening game loss to Team Smith in the 10 am Saturday “B” final,

The junior women’s 3 pm Saturday “C” semi-finals will see Jack take on Ferguson, and Shaw play MacLean, with the winners advancing to the “C” finals at 9 am Sunday. On the junior men’s side, the loser of the 10 am Sat. “B” final takes on Snow in the 3 pm “C” semi-final, with the winner of that game playing Smith in the “C” final at 9 am Sunday.

The championship round, which won’t be necessary if a team wins all three modified triple-knockout sections, goes Sunday at 2, and if necessary, 7 pm.

Seven teams to compete for Pepsi Provincial Junior curling titles in Crapaud

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers in the Under 21 age category, take place at the 4-sheet Crapaud Community Curling Club from December 27-29, with four junior women’s and three junior men’s teams entered.

Defending champions are the Lauren Ferguson junior women’s team from Cornwall and the Tyler Smith foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club. Both skips are back this year, with Ferguson skipping a new team, while Katie Shaw has moved up to the skip position on Ferguson’s previous team.

Teams in both the junior men’s and junior women’s sections will play a modified triple knockout draw, where the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

Live results from the provincial championships will be available at PEICurling.com.
