Katie Shaw rink wins Pepsi Junior Women’s title

The Katie Shaw rink from the Cornwall Curling Club are the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Champions, after defeating their clubmates the Rachel MacLean foursome by a 6-1 score Sunday afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside. The first half of the game was played very conservatively, with 3 blank ends and the teams scoring only one point each. Team Shaw took over the scoring in the second half, stealing the next four ends, with singles in ends six, eight and nine and a deuce in seven, to put the game out of reach for MacLean, who had won two of the Modified Triple Knockout sections while Shaw won the other section and both Championship Round games.

Winning team (L-R): Katie Shaw (skip), Lexie Murray (3rd), David Murphy (coach), Alexis Burris (2nd), Izzy Tatlock (lead)

Finalist team (L-R): Rachel MacLean (skip), Sydney Howatt (3rd), Carl Nicholson (coach). Amy Spence (2nd), Avery Nicholson (lead)

Following the team presentations, awards were given out for Coaching, as voted on by their coaching peers, and Sportsmanship, voted on by the players and officials.

Earlier, the Mitchell Schut team defeated their Cornwall clubmates the Brayden Snow foursome to capture the Junior Men’s title.

The Schut and Shaw rinks will each receive training time with Curl PEI Performance Director Peter Gallant as well as a keepsake gift.  The Canadian Junior Championships have been cancelled this year.

4 Junior Men’s and 3 Junior Women’s rinks took part in the Pepsi Junior Curling Championships.

Team Schut wins Pepsi Junior Men’s, Jr. Womens’ Deciding game moved up to 2 pm

The Mitchell Schut rink, helped by a 5-point sixth end, beat their Cornwall clubmates the Brayden Snow team 10-4 in eight ends on Sunday to win the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside. Team Schut had won two modified triple knockout draw sections to Snow’s one, and could win the championship with either Championship Round game today, while Snow would have had to win both, so the second game is not needed. The teams were tied 3-all at the 5th end break, until Schut, with last rock advantage, recorded the 5-ender.

Winning Schut team, left to right: Mitchell Schut (skip, throws 3rd), Chase MacMillan (vice-skip, throws 4th), Pat Quilty (coach), Cruz Pineau (2nd), Liam Kelly (lead)

Snow Finalist rink, left to right: Brayden Snow (skip), Jack MacFadyen (3rd), David MacFadyen (coach), Liam Barbrick (2nd), Davis Nicholson (Lead)

During the Junior Men’s closing ceremonies, the junior men’s Sportsmanship award, as voted on by players and officials, and Coaching award, voted on by their coaching peers, were presented by Curl PEI Secretary Jane DiCarlo, with Jack MacFadyen from Team Snow winning the Sportsmanship award, and Team Schut coach Pat Quilty taking the Coaching honours.

The Junior Women will play again at 2 pm (new time) after the Katie Shaw foursome beat their Cornwall clubmates the Rachel MacLean team 10-2 in seven ends in their first Championship Round game on Sunday. MacLean had won two of the three qualifying games and a win would have given her the title, but a deciding game will now take place.  A Shaw 4-ender in the seventh put the game out of reach for MacLean.

The winning Mitchell Schut Junior Men’s team, and the Junior Women’s championship team will each receive training time with Curl PEI Performance Director Peter Gallant as well as a keepsake gift.  The Canadian Junior Championships have been cancelled this year.

Pepsi Jrs. Ch’ship Round goes Sunday with Schut vs Snow (Jr. Men’s), MacLean vs Shaw (Jr. Women’s)

It’s down to the Sunday Championship Round at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Cornwall’s Team Mitchell Schut could have won the Junior Men’s title on Saturday evening with a win against their clubmates the Brayden Snow rink, but Snow won that final qualifier game in the Modified Triple Knockout event, scoring two triples and keeping Schut to singles in a 9-3 victory in the evening draw.

However, Schut, who won the other two sections, has a big advantage on Sunday, as a Championship Round win at either 10 am or 3 pm will give him the Junior Men’s title, while Snow would have to win both games.

Both teams live-stream their games on their respective Facebook pages.

Meanwhile, Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean rink has the same “double life” advantage as Schut, in the Junior Women’s Championship Round at the same times, while her opponent and clubmate, Katie Shaw would have to win both games to become champion. MacLean beat Shaw 9-2 in the Saturday evening “C” Qualifier, and also won the “A” event, while Shaw won the B.

Gorveatt rink goes undefeated again this year to win PEI Senior Men’s ch’ship

Just like last year, the Philip Gorveatt rink, curling this year out of the Montague Curling Club, swept their way to victory, going undefeated to win the PEI Senior Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 50 and over, at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside. This is Gorveatt’s fourth Seniors title in five years. They defeated the John Likely foursome, curling out of the Cornwall Curling Club this year, in all three modified triple knockout section finals, winning 9-3, 6-4, and 8-1, and making the Sunday championship round unnecessary. Seven teams took part in the competition. The Gorveatt rink will advance to the Canadian Seniors, expected to be in December at a venue yet to be announced.

Winning Gorveatt rink:

Left to right (skip to lead): Philip Gorveatt, Kevin Champion, Sean Ledgerwood, Mike Dillon, from the Montague Curling Club

Finalist Likely team:

Pepsi Jrs: Schut and MacLean win 1st Qualifiers, play again in 9 am Sat. “B” Quals

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers in the Under 21 age category, continue today at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside, with four junior men’s and three junior women’s teams entered, playing ten-end games. There will be new champions this year as defending Junior champions the Lauren Ferguson junior women’s team from Cornwall, and the Tyler Smith foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club are not back, as Ferguson is curling in Nova Scotia, while Smith has aged out of Juniors and competed as third stone on the winning PEI Tankard men’s team this year, skipped by Eddie MacKenzie.

The Mitchell Schut and Rachel MacLean teams won the “A” Qualifiers in the modified triple knockout draw on Friday morning, with last year’s Junior Women’s finalist team, skipped by Rachel MacLean, fighting back from a 5-0 deficit after five ends against clubmate Ella Lenentine in her U21 debut to win the game 8-7, aided by a 4-point sixth end and single and double steals in the 9th and 10th ends respectively.

Lenentine lost 11-4 to clubmate Katie Shaw in the “B” semi-final. Shaw takes on MacLean in the “B” Qualifier this morning at 9.

On the Junior men’s side, last year’s finalist team, skipped by Mitchell Schut, won the “A” Qualifier  over Cornwall clubmate Brayden Snow and his team by a 9-5 score, helped out by an 8th end triple steal.

The two teams square off again at 9 this morning in the “B” Qualifier of the modified triple knockout draw.

The Team Snow and Team Schut Junior teams are live-streaming their games on their Facebook pages.

Teams in both divisions are playing modified triple knockout draws, where the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

PEI Srs: Dolan one win away from repeat women’s title, Gorveatt and Likely square off again this morning in 2nd Men’s Qualifier

The PEI Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships, for curlers age 50 and over, continue Saturday at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside. The defending champion Kim Dolan rink from the Cornwall Curling Club is now just one win away from repeating as champs in the five-team women’s event. They captured the first of 3 qualifiers in the 5-team women’s championship round with a 7-4 win over Montague’s June Moyaert squad on Thursday evening, and picked up their second Qualifier win in the modified triple knockout draw on Friday evening, with a 10-2 victory over clubmates the Sandy Hope rink in six ends, leading 8-0 after three.

Team Dolan is curling with three players in this event, as Kathy O’Rourke is at the Scotties in Calgary where she is an alternate for Team Birt. Calgary. Dolan is calling the game and throwing final stones, while Julie Scales is vice-skip and throwing the first three rocks, and Susan MacInnis is throwing rocks 4-6. Dolan now faces the winner of a 2 pm game between clubmates Hope and Shirley Berry in the “C” Qualifier at 6:30.  If she wins that game she will have won all three sections, making the 2 game championship round on Sunday unnecessary. If she doesn’t win, her opponent in the championship round would have to win both games, while a win in either would give her the repeat title.

The 7-team men’s round “B” Qualifier goes at 9:30 Saturday morning with two-time defending champ Phil Gorveatt, playing out of Montague, again facing veteran John Likely, who is representing Cornwall. Gorveatt captured the “A” qualifier on Friday morning with a 9-3 win in six ends, leading 7-0 after two. A second section win would give Gorveatt a “double life” in the Sunday championship round at 10 and 3. The “C” qualifier goes at 6:30 pm Saturday.

If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

Live results from the provincial Seniors are available at PEICurling.com.

No spectators are permitted due to COVID-19 restrictions.

PEI Srs: Defending champ Dolan wins 1st Sr. Women’s Qualifier, Gorveatt takes on Likely in Fri. morning Sr. Men’s A Qual.

In the “A” semis, Dolan beat clubmate and last year’s finalist team Shirley Berry 11-4 in six ends, while Moyaert, trailing 5-3 after six, stole three consecutive ends including the extra in a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Cornwall’s Sandy Hope.

The 7-team men’s round “A” Qualifier goes at 9:30 Friday morning with two-time defending champ Phil Gorveatt, playing out of Montague, facing veteran John Likely, who is representing Cornwall. Gorveatt downed Freddy Fraser from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton 10-4 in six ends in the “A” semi-finals, following a stolen Gorveatt five-ender in the 5th and a single-steal in the sixth.
