Mike Gaudet rink wins Mixed

Mike Gaudet, from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, defeated Charlottetown's Eric McQuiggan rink by a 6-4 score Monday afternoon to win the PEI Mixed curling championship. In the afternoon's B section final, Gaudet, who went undefeated in the event, scored a deuce in the first end, stole a single in the third, and picked up a single in the 5th to lead 4-1 at the half. McQuiggan scored three points to Gaudet's two in the second half, but fell two points short of tying it up. Since Gaudet had already won the A final, also against McQuiggan, Tuesday's championship game was not required.

In Monday morning's B semi-finals, Gaudet eliminated ten-time Mixed champion John Likely of Charlottetown with a 9-8 extra-end victory, scoring a single in the 9th, and stealing singles in both the 10th and the extra to recover from a four-ender scored by Likely in the eighth end. McQuiggan advanced to the B final by taking a triple in the 8th end, and stealing singles in ends nine and ten to edge 2002 winner Andrew Robinson of Charlottetown by an 8-7 score. Playing with Mike Gaudet were his sister, current PEI women's and former World Junior champion Suzanne Gaudet at third, along with Craig Arsenault at second stone, and lead Leslie MacDougall, who was also on his team when he previously won the Mixed title in 1997. Pam Raper, Rob Warren, and Lori Connolly round out the McQuiggan foursome. 25 rinks took part in the doubke-knockout event. The Mike Gaudet rink will advance to the Canadian Mixed in Kitchener-Waterloo Ontario, November 10-18, 2006.
