MacPhee makes clean sweep to take Scott Ch'ship
The Charlottetown Curling Club rink of Rebecca Jean MacPhee, Shelly Bradley, Robyn MacPhee and Stefanie Richard, with coach Terry Smith, went undefeated in seven games to make a clean sweep of A, B, and C sections, as the PEI Scott Tournament of Hearts provincial women's curling championships came to a close on Wednesday evening at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The event had been delayed by storms on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday.
In Wednesday evening's "C" division final, MacPhee defeated clubmate, former teammate, and defending PEI Scott champion Suzanne Gaudet in a closely-fought 7-5 decision. Gaudet, with hammer, scored a single in the first end, and stole a deuce in the second. MacPhee got on the board with one point in end three, but Gaudet fought back with a deuce in four. Another MacPhee single brought the score to 5-2 for Gaudet at the half. MacPhee rallied in the final ends, stealing a single, a deuce, and another point to lead 6-5 after eight ends. The ninth end was blanked, and MacPhee picked up a single in the final end to seal the win. Third Shelly Bradley throws skip's rocks for the MacPhee rink. Rebecca Jean and second Robyn MacPhee are sisters. Other members of the Suzanne Gaudet rink are Susan McInnis (third), Janice MacCallum (second) and Tricia Affleck (lead), with Nancy Cameron as fifth player.
Because MacPhee won all three section finals in this triple knockout event, a playoff of the section winners was not necessary. The winning rink will advance to the Canadian Scott Tournament of Hearts, February 19-27 in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador. The PEI curling scene now shifts to the Charlottetown Curling Club, where the Labatt Tankard men's playdowns get underway Thursday at 5:30 pm.
MacPhee wins "B" section as Scott play resumes Play resumed on Tuesday at the PEI Scott Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women's Curling Championship in Crapaud, after a two day delay due to stormy weather. Charlottetown's Rebecca Jean MacPhee, who previously won a berth in the finals by winning the "A" section, edged clubmate Kathy O'Rourke 7-6 in the 7 pm draw to capture the "B" final. MacPhee will play Shirley Berry, who defeated Cornwall clubmate Donna Butler 12-5 tonight, in a 2 pm Wednesday game, with the winner advancing to the 7 pm "C" division final against the winner of the other 2 pm game between O'Rourke and defending champion Suzanne Gaudet, who defeated Charlottetown clubmate Leslie MacDougall 10-3 tonight. If MacPhee is in the "C" final and wins it, she takes the championship. Otherwise, she meets the "C" winner at 10 am on Thursday. If she wins that game, she will earn the Scott title. If not, there will be another final at 2 pm on Thursday, as she must be beaten twice in this triple-knockout event.
Earlier on Tuesday, MacPhee defeated defending champion Gaudet 8-5, while O'Rourke beat Butler 9-6 to advance to the "B" final.
The winning rink will advance to the Scott Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women's Curling Championships February 19-27 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
MacPhee wins Scott Finals Berth
Rebecca Jean MacPhee defeated Charlottetown clubmate Kathy O'Rourke in the "A" final of the PEI Scott 10-3, on Saturday evening, taking a 6-0 start in the first three ends, and never looked back. The win by MacPhee guarantees her rink a spot in the Championship final. In the "B" section Sunday at 7 pm, MacPhee plays defending champion Suzanne Gaudet, while O'Rourke takes on Cornwall's Donna Butler, with the winners meeting in the 2 pm Monday "B" final. "C" division games at 2 pm Sunday see Bev Beaton of Charlottetown facing 2004 Senior champ Shirley Berry of Cornwall, and Tammy Dewar of Montague meeting Melissa Andrews of the host Crapaud Community Curling Club with the winners playing Nola Murphy of Summerside and Leslie MacDougall of Charlottetown respectively in the 7 pm Sunday draw.
The Crapaud Community Curling Club is the site of the 2005 PEI Scott Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women's Curling Championships. Suzanne Gaudet and her Charlottetown rink are back to defend the title they won last year in Cornwall. Gaudet is looking for her third straight Provincial Scott title.
Eleven teams from across the Island have entered the triple knockout competition. The winning rink will advance to the Scott Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women's Curling Championships February 19-27 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
