Mel Bernard and Shirley Berry rinks win PEI Seniors

 The Mel Bernard and Shirley Berry rinks are the 2009 Credit Unions of PEI Senior champions.

Bernard, and his team of Blair Jay, Douglas Simmons, and Earle Proude from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club doubled the defending champion Ted MacFadyen rink by a 6-3 score this afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club to take the Senior Men's title. The first half was low-scoring, with MacFadyen blanking the first two ends, and hitting and staying for a single in the third. Bernard blanked the fourth and tried to blank the fifth, but ended up taking one. He took the lead in the sixth with a steal of two, but gave up a pair in the seventh on a missed double. Bernard drew for a pair in the eighth. MacFadyen blanked the 9th to retain last rock advantage coming come. He ran into trouble in the 10th, needing a double with his first rock to stay alive, and then another double with his final shot, but Bernard took a single for the win. Other members of the runner-up Ted MacFadyen rink are Craig Mackie, Bill Hope (filling in for the injured Sandy Foy), and Mike Coady, with coach Al Ledgerwood. It's Bernard's second Seniors title, winning with the same team in 2007. MacFadyen has won the event six times.15 men's teams took part in the competition.

On Monday morning, MacFadyen edged Peter Gallant of Charlottetown, who has won the last two men's championships and was playing in his first Seniors, by a 7-6 score to win the B final in the double-knockout men's division. Bernard won the A final, also against Gallant, by an 8-4 score.olan came from behind to beat June Moyaert of Montague 12-10 in the semi-final to advance to the championship match against Berry. Dolan was trailing 10-6 after eight ends, but picked up four points in the ninth by executing an angle-raise takeout, and stole two more in the 10th for the win. Berry, who won the B section in the triple knockout competition edged A section winner Dolan 6-5 on Sunday in the Page A vs B game to earn a bye into today's final.

In the eight-team triple knockout women's division, Shirley Berry has captured her third Seniors title, and her second at her home club, with a 6-5 win over Kim Dolan of Charlottetown. Dolan, an eight-time women's champion, was playing in her first Seniors championship. Other members of the Berry rink are Arleen Harris, Danielle Girard, and Carol Sweetapple, with coach Butch McGee. Playing with Dolan were Karen A. MacDonald, Yvonne Campbell, and Karen E. MacDonald. In today's final, Dolan blanked the first two ends and drew for two in the third when Berry's shot was heavy. Berry got on the board in the fourth with a draw for one. The fifth end was blanked and Dolan was forced to take one in the sixth. Berry tied things up at 3-all with a pair in the seventh when Dolan missed a takeout, and grabbed the lead with a stolen deuce in the eighth. Dolan tied it up again with a takeout in the ninth to score two, and called a time-out in the 10th, with each team having three rocks left. Berry's third, Arleen Harris placed a perfect guard, leaving Dolan with almost no shot. Berry picked up a single for the win.
