Peter Gallant wins first Tankard as skip

(Feb. 11) Peter Gallant, who has been on seven Labatt Tankard winning rinks since his first win in 1982, has won his first Provincial Men's Curling Championship at the skip position, after being runner-up last year. And he did it in fine style, with a clean sweep of all seven round robin games, plus the Page playoff and the final. In today's final against two-time defending champion Rod MacDonald, Gallant lead 7-6 with last rock advantage going into the 10th end. MacDonald had one rock biting the back 12 and a guard just outside the rings. Gallant peeled off the guard, and MacDonald put his final stone in the eight foot, hoping that Gallant would hit and roll out, leaving MacDonald with the biter to force the extra end. It was not to be, as Gallant hit and stuck for an 8-6 win. Shortly after getting off the ice, Gallant was joined by his 16 year old son Brett, just off the plane from finishing runner-up in an extra end to Alberta in the Canadian Junior championships in St. Catharine's Ontario.

Other members of the Peter Gallant rink, who curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, are Kevin Champion, Mark O'Rourke, and Robert Campbell, who skipped winning rinks with Gallant at third in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999.

Playing with runner-up Rod MacDonald were Jamie Newson, Mike Gaudet, and Rod's brother Peter MacDonald, who was skip for Gallant's last Tankard win at third in 2001.

In the semi-final on Saturday, MacDonald, curling out of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, defeated Charlottetown's John Likely rink 9-8 to advance to the championship game.

The Peter Gallant rink now advance to the Tim Horton's Brier, March 3-11 in Hamilton Ont.

Here is an end-by-end recap of today's final:

End one - MacDonald freezes to one of his stones biting the back of the house, and Gallant hits and sticks for one.
End two - Facing two, MacDonald draws to the T line ending up in the 4-foot for one
End three - Gallant attempts tough double, but gives up one.
End four - MacDonald heavy on his last shot. Gallant needs mid-eight-foot for a triple, but was heavy and only got two.
End five - Gallant cleans house and MacDonald throws it through to retain last rock advantage going into the 2nd half
End six - Gallant lies 2 in 12 ft. MacDonald is light on draw and gives up a pair.
End seven: Gallant hits and rolls behind cover to cut MacDonald down. MacDonald draws to four foot for the deuce.
End eight: Gallant raises guard to four foot. MacDonald attempts angle raise to take it out, and just misses. Gallant raises again for the deuce.
End nine: MacDonald hits and sticks for two
End ten:MacDonald has front guard and back biter. Gallant peels guard. MacDonald draws to eight foot. Gallant hits and sticks for the win.

(Feb. 10) Two-time defending champion Rod MacDonald from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside has advanced to the 3 pm Sunday final at the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship being played at the Cornwall Curling Club. In the Saturday evening semi-final, MacDonald, who is playing with Jamie Newson, Mike Gaudet, and his brother Peter MacDonald, edged Charlottetown's John Likely rink by a 9-8 score. Likely lead 8-6 after 8, but MacDonald tied it up with a deuce in end 9, and stole a 10th end single for the win. MacDonald went 5-2 in the round robin, losing to Likely and to Peter Gallant. In the final, MacDonald will be playing undefeated Peter Gallant and his Charlottetown Curling Club team of Kevin Champion, Mark O'Rourke, and Robert Campbell.  Saturday afternoon in the 1st place vs 2nd place Page playoff game, Gallant earned a bye to the final by doubling Charlottetown clubmate John Likely by a 6-3 score to go to 8 and 0, aided by a four-point eighth end. MacDonald eliminated Charlottetown's Kyle Stevenson rink with a 6-4 win in the 3rd vs 4th place Page game to advance to the Saturday night semi against Likely.

Opening Ceremonies Held

The opening ceremonies were held on Wednesday evening for the Labatt Tankard Final Eight Provincial Men's Curling Championships. Those on hand to wish the curlers well included Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Elmer MacFadyen, area MLA Ron MacKinley, Cornwall Mayor Patrick MacFadyen, Labatt representative David Mitchell, and PEI Curling Association President Chick Morrison.

PEI Labatt Tankard moves to Round Robin for Final Eight

The PEI Curling Association is announcing a change to the playoff format for the 2007 Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championships. In May 2005, the PEI Curling Association voted to change the playoff format for the 2006 Labatt Tankard Final Eight Championship from a round robin format to a triple knockout format. After consulting curlers, sponsors and fans, it was decided that the round robin format would return for the 2007 Final Eight playdown.

"We handed out a survey to last year's participants and they overwhelmingly voted for a return to the popular round robin format" says Jody Jackson, Marketing and Events Director for the PEI Curling Association. "This format is much better for fans who want to come out to watch their favorite team and also allows fans and sponsors the opportunity to plan around a 'set in stone' final game, which the triple knockout does not allow" adds Jackson.

Also new to this year's Final Eight playdown is the new four team Page playoff system. This system would have the first and second place teams playing off with the winner advancing directly to the final game. The loser of that game would have a second chance as they drop into a semi-final game against the winner of the third place versus fourth place playoff game. "This format is not new to curlers as it is the format used at the Tim Horton's Brier and other national events. In fact, Nova Scotia also adopted this playoff format for this season in hopes that it better prepares the winning team for the national event" adds Jackson.

Labatt Breweries, PEI Curling Association Celebrate Three Decades of Labatt Tankard

The PEI Curling Association and Labatt Breweries are very pleased to announce a new three year agreement for sponsorship of the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship. This new agreement runs through the 2008-2009 curling season and will mark 30 years of Labatt's involvement in men's curling on Prince Edward Island. "We are extremely happy to continue this terrific partnership with Labatt Breweries" says Jody Jackson, Marketing and Events Director for the PEI Curling Association. "In an age where relationships are often short-lived, this thirty year milestone is a testament to the hard work and commitment of both parties over the past three decades" adds Jackson.
