2019 PEI Under 13 Open Curling Championship

Snow, Lenentine, and Carver win U13 Ch’ship divisions in Alberton (Updated)

The PEI Under 13 Curling Championships wrapped up Sunday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with the 9:30 am semi-finals and 1 pm finals for the A, B, and C divisions of this “Open” event, which means there could be any combination of boys and/or girls on a team. This year’s winning teams were very similar to last years, with the Brayden Snow foursome from the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside going undefeated to win the “A” division. Snow was a member of last year’s winning team and also skipped this year’s U16 championship rink. The “B” champions were again the Ella Lenentine squad from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the “C” winners were again the Sydney Carver rink from Montague, with the same curlers on the team as last year.

The Brayden Snow rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside was impressive in the round robin, winning both their games by wide margins and earning a bye to the 1 pm Sunday “A” Final where they again won by a wide margin, over the Isaiah Dalton team from Charlottetown and Cornwall. The Dalton rink edged the Nate Shaw foursome from Montague 7-6 in the morning semi-final, with Shaw, who was a finalist last year. keeping it close by scoring 5 points in the last two ends

The Ella Lenentine rink from Cornwall successfully defended last year’s “B” division title, winning by a big margin over the James MacWilliams rink from the Maple Leaf in the Sunday afternoon final. MacWilliams and his team beat their clubmates, the Jorja McLellan team, in the morning semi-final.

The Sydney Carver rink from Montague, won the “C” again this year with a 6-3 win over the Mollie Shaw team from Charlottetown. Shaw beat the Carly Sweet and Mary Jane Gavin-Shea squad from the Maple Leaf club in the semi-final.

During the closing ceremonies, the Sportsmanship award, as voted on by the players, was presented to Sydney Carver.

Also, the Coaching award, as voted on by their coaching peers and the officials, was presented to Team Snow coach Andrew MacDougall.

Sunday semi-finals and finals set at U13 in Alberton, with Snow, Lenentine, and Carver earning byes to finals

The 9:30 am Sunday semi-finalists for the A, B, and C division Championship rounds have been determined at the Provincial Under 13 Open Curling Championships at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with the winners facing off in the Championship Finals against the first place teams in each division at 1 pm. This is an “Open” event, which means there can be any combination of boys and/or girls on a team.

The Brayden Snow rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside was impressive in the round robin, winning both their games by wide margins and earning a bye to the 1 pm Sunday “A” Final. They’ll be playing the winner of the semi-final game between the Nate Shaw squad from Montague, also undefeated at 2-0, and the Isaiah Dalton foursome from Charlottetown, who had a 1-1 record in the round robin. Snow was on the winning team last year and skipped this year’s Under 16 championship team, while Team Shaw was also in the final game last year.

The Ella Lenentine rink from Cornwall will be looking to defend last year’s “B” division title, and have advanced to the “B” final with 1-1 win-loss record (head to head records, cumulative draw to the button results, and points were used to break ties between teams with the same win-loss records), and will play the winner of the morning “B” semi-final between the Jorja McLellan and James MacWilliams rinks from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, who also have 1-1 records.

The Sydney Carver rink from Montague is back with last year’s team intact, and are also looking for a repeat title in the “C” division, and have already advanced to the division final, with a 1-1 record. They’ll be facing the winner of the 9:30 semi-final between the Mollie Shaw foursome from Charlottetown, and the Carly Sweet and Mary Jane Gavin-Shea squad from the Maple Leaf (both 0-0).

 

Western Community Curling Club hosting 2019 Under 13 Open Curling Ch’ship

The Western Community Curling Club in Alberton will play host to Curl PEI’s championship event for its youngest curlers — those under the age of 13 years, from March 15-17. This is an “open” event with any combination of boys and/or girls on a team. Teams play six-end games.

Nine teams from five of the seven PEI curling clubs are entered. Brayden Snow from last year’s A section-winning rink from the Silver Fox, is now skipping that team, and will looking for his second title. Last year’s B section winning skip Ella Lenentine from Cornwall is also back, as is “C” winner Sydney Carver from Montague. The Nate Shaw (Montague) and Jorja McLellan (Maple Leaf) finalist teams from last year are also entered.

The teams were randomly divided into three pools and will play a single robin within each pool, with the first place team in each pool advancing to the A Final series, the 2nd place in each pool competing in the B Final series, and the 3rd place team playing in the C Final series.

There will be no tie-breakers played for placement into the finals.

Placement from each pool into a Final will be determined first by win/loss, then head to head between tied teams, then cumulative Last Stone Delivery (draw to the button) and finally by points.

5 Points per win, 1 point per end and 1 point for difference of score to a max of 3.

Specific Rules of Play for the Provincial U13
1. Competitors will be a maximum of 12 years of age on June 30 of the year prior to the
competition.
2. Games will be six (6) ends.
3. This will be an open event (all boys, all girls or any combination on a team)
4. All teams must have an adult coach or Chaperone on-site for each game. Minimum
certification is not required to access field of play.
5. The U13 will continue to be tied to the March Break. It will not be held either weekend of
the March break but the closest weekend prior to or after the March break that the Club is
able to host them.
6. There must be an official at all draws.
7. Time clocks will not be used.
