Tiffany Sweet team sweeps 17 and Under Women's section 
Matthew MacLean rink wins 17 and Under Men's title

Feb. 22-The Matthew MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary stole a deuce in the first end, and scored five points in the third on the way to a 9-4 victory over the Kyle Hughes foursome from Montague and Charlottetown, to win the Sylvan Learning Provincial 17 and Under men’s final this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Playing with MacLean were Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Alan MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon Smallman.  Other members of the runner-up Hughes team are Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis, and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arnie Nabuurs.

The MacLean team will be joining their clubmates the Tiffany Sweet rink, who won the 17 and Under women’s section on Sunday, at the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay New Brunswick.

Feb. 21-The Tiffany Sweet rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary went undefeated to sweep all three triple-knockout sections to capture the women’s section of the Sylvan Learning Provincial age 17 and Under Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. All three section finals were against the same team – the Veronica Smith foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club. Sweet won the A section Friday afternoon by a 6-3 score, the B section by a 5-4 score on Saturday morning, and the C final on Sunday morning, also by a 5-4 score, but in an extra end. Sweet, and teammates Chantal Clements, Kathleen O’Meara, and Laura O’Meara, with coaches Clair and Ralph Sweet now advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB. Other members of the runner-up Smith rink are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with coaches Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton.

 In the Junior Men's section, Matthew MacLean of the Maple Leaf captured the C division final on Sunday morning, beating A final winner Kyle Hughes and his combined Montague/Charlottetown team by a 6-4 score. MacLean then took on B section winner Jeff Taylor of Cornwall in the first championship round game. Taylor lead 3-2 after four ends, when MacLean grabbed the lead with a triple in the fifth. Taylor took a deuce in six, and stole another pair in the sixth to tie the game, MacLean had hammer in the final end, and picked up a single for a 7-6 win. The MacLean team now face A finalist Hughes in the championship game, Monday at 3 pm. Playing with MacLean are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Alan MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon Smallman. Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arnold Nabuurs, round out the Hughes team.

 

Following the Sunday draw, the Fairplay and Coaching awards were presented, with skip Jenny McLean from the Silver Fox winning the women's Fairplay award, and Alex Matters from Charlottetown taking the men's.

Pat Quilty, coach of the Tricia Sanderson rink from Cornwall,  took the Coaching award for the women's teams, while Arnold Nabuurs, coach of the Kyle Hughes rink, took the award for the men's teams.

The winning men's team will also advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
