Seniors and 17 and Under Provincial Curling Championships start Thursday

SENIORS

The PEI Seniors Curling Championships, sponsored by Credit Unions of PEI, for curlers age 50 and over, get underway Thursday morning at the Charlottetown Curling Club, with 11 men’s rinks, and seven women’s teams participating, including defending men’s champ Mel Bernard from the Silver Fox curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and the defending women’s champion Shirley Berry team from Cornwall and Charlottetown. Bernard’s team is identical to last year, while Berry has changed two members.

Both divisions will play a triple-knockout format, with draws at 9 am, 2 and 7 pm Thursday through Sunday, followed by a two game championship round between the triple-knockout section winners on Monday at 9 am and 2 pm. In the event that a team wins all three sections, the final round would not be played. If a team wins two sections, they would win the championship if they took either Monday game.

The winning teams will advance to the Canadian Seniors, March 19-28 at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.

17 AND UNDER

There will be two new champions in the Sylvan Learning Provincial Age 17 and Under Curling Championships, taking place at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, as the Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall, this year’s Pepsi Junior champions, and the Kevin Rice foursome from Montague have graduated from the age category. Eight junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s rinks are entered in this triple-knockout event, with draws Thursday and Friday at 11 am, and 3 and 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 11 and 3, and Monday at 3, if needed. The section winners from the men’s and women’s triple-knockout will advance to the two-game championship rounds, which won’t be required if the same team wins all three sections. If a team wins two sections, they will take the championship if they win either of the two championship round games, Sunday and Monday at 3 pm. The winning rinks will advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
