O’Rourke 4-1, faces defending champ this morning at SW Ont. Spiel

PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink, who defeated three time event winner and last year’s runner-up Sherry Middaugh on Saturday, now faces the defending champions, the  Cathy Auld team from Missisauga, at 9 Eastern this morning at the 14th annual Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Spiel in London Ontario. O’Rourke, who won her first three games, lost 9-3 to Toronto’s Alison Goring on Saturday afternoon, but rebounded in the evening with a four point final end to defeat Lockerbie Scotland’s Anna Sloan a second time in the event, this time by a 9-5 score.

A win against Auld this morning would advance the O’Rourke foursome, which includes Erin Carmody, who throws 4th stones, along with Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and Tricia Affleck, into a quarter-final match at 7 ET this evening. A loss would put them into a 1 pm game against either Lisa Farnell of Peterborough, or Tracy Horgan of Sudbury, with the loser being eliminated, and the winner advancing to tonight’s quarter-final round. The semis go Monday at 9 am, with the final at 1 pm.

Goring, and Ottawa’s Rachel Homan, who won the event in both 2007 and 2008, are undefeated in the event, and have already earned quarter-final berths.

The eventual winner of this 24 team charity spiel for breast cancer research earns a spot in the Canada Cup, Dec. 1-5 in Medicine Hat Alberta.
