O’Rourke advances to quarter-finals after come from behind win over defending champ at SW Ont. Charity Spiel

PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink were trailing 4-2 after six ends in this morning’s game against defending champion Cathy Auld of Missisauga at the Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Spiel in London, but picked up four points in the seventh, and went on to win the game 6-4, to advance to the quarter-final round, tonight at 7 Eastern. PEI, who have a 5-1 win-loss record, their only loss being to undefeated Alison Goring of Toronto, will face the winner of a 1 pm ET game between Katie Morrissey of Ottawa (with PEI native Kiri Campbell at third) and Shelley Nichols of St. John’s in tonight’s game.

Other members of the O’Rourke rink are Erin Carmody, who throws 4th stones, Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and Tricia Affleck. Other qualifiers for the quarter-finals so far are the two undefeated teams, skipped by Alison Goring and 2007 and 2008 event winner Rachel Homan of Ottawa, along with Lévis Quebec’s Marie France LaRouche team.

The semi-finals go Monday at 9 am ET, with the final at 1 pm. The event winner will receive an invitation to the Canada Cup, Dec. 1-5 in Medicine Hat. Proceeds from this 14th annual event go to breast cancer research.
