PEI splits games today at Canadian Firefighters in Truro to go to 4-4

PEI’s Gordon MacFadyen rink from the Summerside Fire Department split their games today  at the 53rd Canadian Firefighters Curling Championship at the Truro Curling Club, losing by one point to co-leader Southern Ontario with a 9-8 score in the morning, and downing the rink from the Northwest Territories 6-2 in the afternoon to end the day with a 4-4 win-loss record. Other members of the Island squad, who have won the PEI Firefighters Championship three years in a row, are Leo Stewart, Dwayne MacNeil and Jim Arsenault. PEI wraps up round robin play against Northern Ontario and Manitoba on Thursday.

Northern and Southern Ontario continue to lead the round robin, with 6-2 records, followed by Alberta at 6-3, and Manitoba at 5-3. The teams from the three Maritime provinces are all at 4-4, followed by  BC, Saskatchewan and Quebec all with three wins and the Northwest Territories with one.

Round robin play wraps up Thursday with draws at 10 am and 3 pm. Tiebreakers, if needed, and the Page playoffs, where the 1st and 2nd place teams from the round robin square off in one game, and the 3rd and 4th place teams play in the other, take place on Friday. The winner of the Page 1st vs 2nd will advance directly to the final, Saturday at 1pm, while the loser will play the winner of the Page 3rd vs 4th game in the 9 am Saturday semi-final, with the winner of that game going to the final.

Eleven teams, from all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador, including separate Northern and Southern Ontario rinks, along with the Northwest Territories, are taking part.
