PEI’s Matthew MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and Veronica Smith team from the Cornwall Curling Club, are undefeated after opening day play at the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, being played this weekend at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow, and featuring the Atlantic provincial champions from the age category, plus a host team, in both men’s and women’s divisions.

The MacLean rink, which includes third Marshall Smallman, second Kevin Gallant, and lead Alan MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean, are the only undefeated men’s team, with a 2-0 win-loss record, stealing the last two ends to beat Chester NS’s Daniel Jessome rink 6-4, and building up a 6-2 lead in their game over the Daniel Prest foursome from Bridgewater, and hanging on for a 6-5 win after Prest picked up a triple in the final end. Jessome, and Stephen Trickett from St. John’s are 1-1, while Prest and PEI native Kyle Hughes and his Saint John team are 0-1. PEI’s MacLean foursome plays the Hughes rink in their lone Saturday game at 10 this morning, and finishes up round robin play against Tricket at 9 am Sunday.

In the women’s section, the PEI rink of Veronica Smith, third Katie Fullerton, second Sabrina Smith, and lead Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith, beat the Haley McCabe foursome of Lakeshore 7-5 in their only Friday game. PEI plays the Cathlia Ward team from New Brunswick at 10 am on Saturday, and the Sarah Hill team from Newfoundland and Labrador at 2:30 pm, and wraps up round robin action Sunday morning at 9 against Krista Nix and her team from the host Bluenose club. Nix and Smith are both 1-0, while Ward and Hill are 1-1, and McCabe is 0-2 going into Saturday play.
The finals and consolation finals go Sunday at 1 pm.
