MacLean 3-0, Smith 2-1 after Saturday play at U18 Atlantics

PEI’s Matthew MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary is the only undefeated rink,  at 3-0, in the men’s section, while the Veronica Smith team from the Cornwall Curling Club is tied for the lead with a 2-1 record in the women’s division, following Saturday play at the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow, featuring the Atlantic provincial champions from the 18 and Under age category, plus a host team, in both men’s and women’s divisions.

The MacLean rink, which includes third Marshall Smallman, second Kevin Gallant, and lead Alan MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean, won their only game today, against PEI native Kyle Hughes and his Saint John New Brunswick team, by a 6-2 score, grabbing the lead early with a steal of 4 points in the opening end.

PEI’s MacLean foursome finishes up round robin play against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Stephen Tricket rink at 9 am Sunday.

In the women’s section, the PEI rink of Veronica Smith, third Katie Fullerton, second Sabrina Smith, and lead Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith, split their games today, losing 8-6  to the Cathlia Ward team from New Brunswick this morning, and beating the Sarah Hill team from Newfoundland and Labrador by a 9-3 score this aternoon. The Smith rink wraps up round robin action Sunday morning at 9 against Krista Nix and her team from the host Bluenose club. Nix and Smith currently share the lead at 2-1, while Ward is 2-2.

The finals and consolation finals go Sunday at 1 pm.
