Gushue rink loses close semi-final at Perth Masters; McEwen vs Ulsrud in final

The Brad Gushue rink, which includes PEI natives Adam Casey and Brett Gallant, lost 5-4 to Thomas Ulsrud and his Norway rink in the noon (Perth time) semi-finals at the Perth Masters in Perth Scotland. This morning, the Gushue squad defeated the Tomi Rantamaki rink of Finland by a 5-1 score in the quarter-finals to advance to the semi. Other quarter-final winners were Ulsrud, Ewan MacDonald from Scotland, and Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen, who then took on MacDonald in the other semi.

In Gushue’s semi, Gushue was leading 2-1 after five, but a heavy draw in the sixth allowed Ulsrud to make a straight hit for a triple. Gushue took two in the seventh to come home tied 4-4 without last rock. Ulsrud drew to the four foot for a single in the eighth for the 5-4 win.

The McEwen/MacDonald game came down to an extra end, with McEwen making a hack weight nose hit to score one and win 6-5, to advance to his third consecutive final at the Perth Masters.
The game was tied at four in the sixth, with McEwen stealing a single in seven to go into the eighth end without the hammer. MacDonald played a hit and stick for his single in the eighth  to take the game to the extra end tied 5-5.

Ulsrud and McEwen went undefeated through the A side of the knockout draw, while Gushue qualified on the B side, with one loss, and beat Pascal Hess of Switzerland in his qualifier game in just 4 ends, winning 7-0 in a one sided affair. Gushue’s extra-end loss earlier came at the hand of  Kyle Smith, who kept it tight right to the eighth end where Brad took  2 to level the score and handed Kyle the hammer in the extra end and the young Scotsman didn’t waste it, taking his 1 to seal the victory.
