PEI’s Birt, O’Rourke among teams advancing to playoff round at Curl Atlantic Ch’ship

With one round robin draw left, at 8 am Sunday, at the Curl Atlantic Championship at Charlottetown’s CARI Complex,  the noon Sunday semi-finalists have already been determined in both women’s round robin pools, and one of the two men’s.  James Grattan of New Brunswick and Peter Burgess of Nova Scotia are the men’s qualifiers so far, finishing play in their pool with 5-0 and 4-1 records, respectively. Nova Scotians Chad Stevens and Tom Sullivan are both 3-1 in the other pool, with three other teams, skipped by Ian Fitzner-Leblanc (NS),  Jamie Murphy  (NS) and Marc LeCocq (NB) still in the hunt at 2-2, while PEI’s Eddie MacKenzie is out of contention at 0-4.

Heather Smith-Dacey of Halifax and PEI’s Suzanne Birt are the two semi-finalists from one of the womens pools, finishing play at 5-0 and 4-1 respectively. The two teams met in the Saturday 9 pm draw, with Smith-Dacey winning 6-5 in an extra end, when Birt, with the final rock in the end, attempted a triple takeout on three Nova Scotia rocks in the house, but one of the stones remained as shot rock to give the victory to Smith-Dacey.

The other two women’s semi-finalists are Stacie Devereaux of Newfoundland and Labrador who went undefeated at 5-0 in her pool, and PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke team, close behind at 4-1. O’Rourke had two 7-2 wins on Saturday, against Nova Scotia’s Christine Black and Colleen Pinkney.

The other PEI rinks in the event are out of playoff contention, with Rod MacDonald losing 7-2 to Burgess Saturday night to drop  to 2-3, and Jamie Newson falling to 1-4 Saturday night, shaking hands at half-time in his game against Mark Dacey of Halifax, trailing 9-0.

The 8 am Sunday draw sees Sylvie Robichaud (NB, 2-2) vs. Melissa Adams (NB, 2-2), Shelly Nichols (NL, 0-4) vs. Beth Hamilton (NL, 0-4), Eddie MacKenzie (PE, 0-4) vs. Marc Le Cocq (NB, 2-2), Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc (NS, 2-2) vs. Jamie Murphy (NS, 2-2). and Chad Stevens (NS, 3-1) vs. Tom Sullivan (NS, 3-2)

The semi-final winners will square off in the 4 pm Sunday finals.
