It’ll be Shirley Berry taking on last year’s runner-up Kim Dolan in this evening’s 7 o’clock semi-final, with the winner facing 2010 Canadian silver medallist Kathy O’Rourke in the 2 pm Sunday final of the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championship, being played at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Berry, a former Seniors champ, curls out of the Cornwall Curling Club and Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club, while Dolan, who has 9 provincial women’s championships to her credit, and O’Rourke, a six-time winner, are from the host club.
Shirley Berry
O’Rourke clinched her berth in the final Friday night, going through round robin play with a perfect record. Berry, with a 2-1 record in the five team round robin, had a lock on one of the two semi-final spots by that time as well, leaving only one spot in the championship round to be decided in this afternoon’s final round robin draw, with Kim Dolan squaring off against Charlottetown clubmate Lisa Jackson. Both teams had 1-2 records going into the game, which Dolan won by a 7-2 score to advance to this evening’s semi.
Team O’Rourke
Jackson opened the scoring with a deuce in two, but Dolan scored a single in the third, and stole the rest of the game, with a single, a deuce, and another single in the next three ends to lead 5-2 after six, and another deuce in eight to bring the game to an early end.
The other game this afternoon had no affect on the results, but gave defending champion Suzanne Birt her only win in the event, by an 8-2 score over Berry. Birt was leading 3-1 after 4, when she pulled off a 5-ender. Berry scored a single in the sixth end, but it was handshake time, with an 8-2 final score for Birt.
The winner of Sunday afternoon’s final will advance to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena, Montreal, QC.\
