Smith wins opener at Scotties (Guardian)

Draw 2 at 7 p.m. is going ahead tonight

CORNWALL, P.E.I. – Veronica Smith’s team from the host Cornwall Curling Club knocked off the two-time defending champs Thursday in the opening draw of this year’s P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The Smith rink defeated Robyn MacPhee’s team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex 9-0 in seven ends. The game was scoreless through two ends before Smith stole a deuce in the third end and kept scoring with two in the fourth, three in the fifth and singles in the sixth and seventh ends to end the contest.

 

In the Tankard men’s competition, taking place in Cornwall with the Scotties, Eddie MacKenzie and his defending championship squad scored a deuce in the 10th end to defeat John Likely 10-9.
